It’s perfectly legal. Whether it’s morally right or wrong is a matter of political debate. As is whether these loopholes should be closed. 

If a business owner is asking for a government bailout, yet he’s avoided billions in tax by moving away, then his hypocrisy is of course going to be questioned.

Funny that he’s moved away & contributes nothing but has such strong opinions on how the country is run. Maybe he’ll return & starting paying tax when Farage gets in. 
 

If not then maybe he should focus a little more on politics in Monaco 😉

It should be a rite of passage, and I genuinely believe degrees should be Government funded.

In hindsight, I regret not going down the Uni route, and choosing to do an apprenticeship instead. It was pretty much like a continuiation of school, with set hours, and bitter old Instructors who treated you like shite and spoke to you like you were still a child - so it delayed my experience of "independence" by years. Meanwhile, most of my mates were out partying every night, meeting new people from vastly different backgrounds, and having to take responsibility for their studies and finances etc. My daughter is having the time of her life at Uni, and I'll definitely be advising my lad to do the same in a few years.

Spot on. A good proportion attain an 'ology' degree and end up flipping burgers or competing with unskilled labour types for scraps. Down to idleness IMO - not prepared to jump into industry and work for a living.

We should be offering all sorts of inducements to youngsters to embark upon trade apprenticeships.

To an extent I blame parents and their egotistical desire to boast about 'My Brody is studying at Oxford/Durham/Cambridge'.

I have a great admiration for skilled tradesmen. Long may they be held in high esteem.

Totally agree, University places should streamed towards the most capable.

I think it was Blair who stated every child should have the opportunity of a Degree which led to a proliferation of pointless niche degrees such as Surfing Science, Brewing and Distilling, DJing and Electronic Music and so on. All of these should be vocational studies and if so, would save on large student loan accounts.

Its not about being capable now, its about money and that is the issue. University is not seen as an option for some.of our most capable but don't have the right background in terms of money.

Its gaming the system, education shoildnt weight young adults down in debt. And still if you have a degree the stats show that you are likely to have a higher earning capability so the money stays at the top.

Its a shite state of affairs and all this, too many kids bollocks, is quite frankly playing into the hands of those who want to cauterise acceptance into higher education and believe only some subject areas have enough academic - or more importantly - capitalist benefits.

Its another way of populists to make the working class self sabotage.

 I’m not Sir Jim though. I’m not giving indepth interviews to mainstream media about the state of this country. Neither am I using my power & influence to shape politics and cosy up to leaders. Again, if he cares so much about this country, he should contribute to it. Rather than voting for a political outcome that caused huge economic damage to businesses, then fucking off to Monaco.

I went to uni in 1994, so well before Blair and the type of degrees you mention

No tuition fees, grant off the Council to cover the rent etc etc

It was the thing to do, right of passage etc

Most of the people I knew were exactly the same 

But I know plenty who just tossed it off and a lad I knew got kicked off as he just wanted to do Es and go out clubbing

There was no streaming to the most capable, if you got the necessary A-levels then you were in 

I spent a good time getting pissed and shagging around but also did what I did academically to get me through

Heriot Watt has offered a degree in brewing since 1923

My dad spent ages trying to persuade me to do it so we could set up a brewery.

Many folk on PIP work and pay taxes. PIP is done as 'the extra money you need to live with your disability'.

Mate did his physics degree at Heriot Watt it sat between McEwan's brewery and the McVitties biscuit factory depending on the wind he'd either be starving or craving a pint come the end of his lecture.

The whisky distillery course graduate show apparently sold bottles for a small fortune to collectors.

I am the total opposite, I went to Uni and had the time of my life, brilliant. Always said I would tell anyone who got the chance to do the same. Back then 5-10% of kids went to Uni. No loans, got a grant in 2 of the years. Everyone I was at Uni with was working or further studies as soon as we left. Bit of debt but more because of how I spent my time there. 

But….my step lad did not fancy it, went down the apprentice route at 18, 8 years later he is working at same place, they have trained him and paid for his studies and has a first class honours degree, decent career path in front of him and not a penny of debt. Hardly any of his mates who went to Uni are using their degree in their job. They have spent 3 years building up massive debt, having a laugh, taking drugs. 
 

As much as I loved my time , he has done the right thing for him, but also IMO the right thing for these days. Education is really important but just learning stuff is not what a Uni education should be about. 
 

Employers are at fault as well here, you see jobs advertised as ‘degree required’ but the job is pretty basic that half the population could do, but as 50% of kids are being churned through a so called education ‘degree required’ now means bang average. Be interesting if the Govt put a levy of jobs that require a degree, so employer needs to pay some of the costs of education, how many jobs would suddenly not need a degree. 
 

I have no problem with people going to Uni to get a ‘good’ education but it seems real con getting people to rack up thousands in debt for a piece of paper that is of no real use. I would advise any kid of that age to spend their time travelling and discovering the world.

That is the "streaming" I was referring to... do 6th Form, work at it and then go to Uni.

PS: I graduated in 1980 and had a grant from Bolton Council (4 A Levels) with a little bit of parental contribution.
