Last time 'equivalence' was discussed on here. I tried to explain why the EU would be worried as London is regarded as a centre of money laundering.

Since then we have announced relaxing of the rules.

I'm sure Rees-Mogg would have no hesitation in lowering standards, however his proposed bill had no hope of being voted through, and he's no longer a Minister.

Wouldn't read too much into that. At the last General Election, Farage said the Brexit Party would field a candidate in every Tory seat, then withdrew almost all of them because he believed Boris Johnson had a great deal. No surprise that he now considers that deal to be "a betrayal".

Given that the EU UK haven’t agreed equivalence perhaps our government have decided that they might as well relax the rules  in the city and that relaxation could bring in more money that benefits us, what are your thoughts on that?  … ultimately if Labour get into power they might reverse this decision, be interesting to see what tack the next Labour government take.

As I said in previous post Labour could reverse relaxation and use it as leverage in discussions to gain equivalence in product standards.

Given the embarrassing show by Sunak yesterday of saying nothing at all in a way only a sixth form we would be proud of (hastily arranged when the Conservatives knew Labour were making a statement today)

We get to weigh Labour's balls. This is the year that the policy markers have to be set and I'd hope this will give us an outline of that direction of travel.

I believe it'll be mainly lead by Cost of Living and NHS with a light touch on Brexit (although, personally I think they can go harder on this given its becoming a hardliner issue of a fringe of people) but we'll see, and also hope it's got.more substance than yesterday's puff of air.

Again, totally incorrect. 

Removal of eu laws doesn't guarantee dropping standards. Just purely part of the transition process.

It only allows for such things to happen, should any government here deem that necessary, which hasnt happened. Perhaps Starmer may choose to should he get in, or maybe he won't as there is no desire to?

The eu also retains its own right to reduce standards for its members should it choose to do so- does that automatically mean they will do? 

Two entirely different things, which you struggle to get your head round, or is it more that the narrative cannot be moved away from.

There has been no weakening of food production standards. 

As it happens, chnages are happening with regards to funding to allow for a better environmental approach in land management, as I've said before. Some are happy about it, others aren't, no surprise but such is life. No doubt in time, the ELMS system will undergo changes as it develops.

There was a little published article a while back about supposed poor enforcement of standards in Australia, which could be problematic if stuff imported from there is found to be below standard, but we have seen the occasional issue whilst a member of the EU anyway; the horse meat scandal, BSE being two such examples.
