Apparently R&BHS is, so I'm sending my son into a 5/7 year hell from which he will emerge scarred and on track to a life of jail hopping, robberies and heroin.

 

If I sell the family silver, I can always send him to Bolton School where he runs the risk of ending up exactly the same only with better contacts inside jail and a bigger Adam's apple.

 

Alternatively, I could send him to a Catholic school where the chances are excellent that he'll be slurping down a fistful of Papal-approved love custard before he's finished his first assembly.

Rivi looked like it had changed beyond all recognition the last time I went up that way a couple of years ago, I'd have thought for the better though - what's up with it?

 

I finished up there after 6th form in 2001 and despite the usual level of twats you'd get at any school, the making you do PE in last period before home in the fucking rivers and forests behind the school, and at least one of those teachers clearly being a bit of a peado, I thought it was alright? Better than Smithills anyway, unless I'm stuck in the 90's?!

Canon Slade is probably best of a bad bunch in this area imo.

If you're child is talented at anything it will be encouraged and nurtured.

If you're child is average or worse at most things they will just fall in with the rest of the class, but they consistently achieve better results than most schools.

Rivi has disappointed me so much, really regret picking it for my lad.

 

He is doing well, because he is quite clever and works hard.

When I was at Rivi, there was the fair share of dicks but those who were bright were encouraged. No idea if things are the same now or not, or if general behaviour is worse?

The grading is strange, which cuts off many kids from GSCS v BTEC courses. No explaining of how or IF they can improve to move grade level.

No communication, oh only if you child sneezes in class without permission. But no return calls about homework/lesson/extra help questions.

Sweeping bullying under the carpet, working out ways to NOT take things further, rather than deal with the issue of kids/kids.

No recognition for sporting achievements, last minute communication on events or teams they have been selected for.

Going way over the top with giving praise & extra merit to problem kids.

Being forced to pick a sport if they clash….and when this results in child quitting the sport…PUNISH HIM!!!

Teachers not turning up to parents evening.

I hope we have been unlucky, and this is not happening to others.

this is the same all over from what i see.

 

when i was at Thornleigh, you'd get a bollocking if your still had your Pe socks on with your uniform going out the gate, and were told get in the shower after it, now my lad comes home full football kit & full of mud after a PE lesson and showers at home.

not sure what happens if the PE is first lesson like, but they definitely dont take towels as part of the pe kit like we used have to.

 

That said, as schools go, few gone through or currently at Thornleigh and no complaints from me, certainly a lot better than when i was there and id go as far as saying its very good

Biggest problems school face for me are an acceptance of poorer behaviour standards and more SEN kids in mainstream.

 

That's fine in theory (inclusion) but when teachers are having to deal with x amount of extra paperwork, planning and general accountability it all becomes very draining.

 

Add to that bugger all funding and less and less support and schools are pretty much forced to 'pander' to the less gifted and general fcukwits.

 

This is why a lot of PC stuff winds me up as you can't openly discuss the blatantly obvious without the obvious criticisms that come with it.  And even if folk did there's not really any other options.

 

fwiw when I was at school the social norm was more that you learned how to behave at home before going to school - for more and more kids that isn't the case.

It was fucked the minute they started letting folk pick and choose their schools instead of just sending kids to the nearest one.

My two left Rivi in 2010 and 2013 having done sixth form there as well (or whatever it’s called now) - both went on to uni, one getting a 2:1 and the other a 1st so I’ve no complaints about Rivi and the education they gained and don’t recall either moaning too much about owt whilst they were there other than the obvious school kid gripes

Manc, your's went to rivi with the Previous headmaster, nice bloke, very good head teacher.

 

The school was then LEA and is now academy, different head and restructured. I did my teacher training there, it's a tough school. 

 

There are no bad teachers anymore, they have all been bulllied/pushed out or gone to the private sector. However there is a culture of ruthlessness by "executive heads" that need to hit targets. The ones that are still in schools hang on but it is stressful. I've been very lucky where i have found a school where the head leaves the business side to his deputies and shows a real interest in the students and their needs. 3 classes today, first group was year 9 top set computer science hanging on every word about variables and loops, next was a SEN support group (mixture of SEND/behaviour), very draining.. last was a Year 9 set 2, hard work but fun to teach. You have to take the rough with the smooth. They're all a dream compared to the last school. 

 

Education starts at home, if you spend time with your kid, encourage them to learn and show an interest 9/10 it translates to the classroom. The school will facilitate the rest. Granted some do majorly mess up, but as a teacher you can tell which parents want the best for their kids and it does reflect with their attitude in the classroom.

We weren’t allowed out of the changing rooms until the teacher “could feel wet backs” coming out of the shower, so...

My lad doesn't shower after PE.

They have 2 fifty minute periods per week for it.

Take off time for getting changed either side and they barely get chance to break sweat. Absolutely pointless.

 

Still they have to do RE all the way through so that's ok.

At Rivi if your PE is first period you HAVE to go to school in PE kit.....Even if your are injured/ill and cant do PE.

Our lad is at Turton and there are loads of soft sort trying to avoid PE because they can’t be arsed. I imagine this stops some of that too.
