Was it called “Boxing Day” because it was the second bank holiday as Christmas fell on a weekend?

That was comical. At half time a load of City fans came marching round the pitch dead cocky & started climbing into the Chaddy End at the front.  There were thousands ?? of Bolton fans on the open end & my guess is that they didn't realise that there were a few hundred of Bolton's finest on the Chaddy End, & as City climbed in, Bolton belted them. The City fans left again minutes later.

Remember going to Blackpool ( maybe day after boxing day ) in the mid 70s .

Went on the train from trinity street . Just turned up at the station and bought a ticket . Booking hall was rammed with wanderers,  all bouncing up and down.  Wooden floorboards  wobbling . There was a wanderer dressed in a furry gorilla suit with a scarf tied around neck. The whole station wa singing "gorilla gorilla gorilla " . Sure I saw him on the segregated Kop. We stood in the little paddock that ran the whole length of the pitch . Wanderers fans in all parts of stadium . Great day out .

Was a student at uni at  the time . Remember blagging our way in kids entrance . Blackpool was u16 . 

We always won. 

 

Sheff Utd away , we scored 5 was 27th Dec I think .

Kinell, didn't even know what football was then.

Might be wrong, but it seems we rarely win on boxing Day.

1977 Notts County won 2-0, my first game stood on a milk crate in the Lever End.

1980 Wrexham away won 1-0 Nel Whatmore scored.

Queues were huge until a well known ex pat booted the gates open to the Kop end which had been closed down for safety reasons after the Bradford fire.

 

Pretty sure David Cross scored for us.

Spot on. Phil Neal hadn't long since taken over. Blackpool were said to be expecting 700 of us. I think there were over 4000.

No mention of our first league game at Wigan? Boxing day 1983 (?). 11.00am kick off. They missed a penalty through ex Wanderer Steve Taylor. Jeff Chandler nodded in our winner at the back post in front of several thousand Wanderers fans.  Home fans outnumbered which set the pattern for all our future trips there.

Last time this happened we played Sunderland at home then Pompey away in consecutive days probably 1993ish over Xmas.

94 - away to sunderland 1-1, then Tranmere.at home 1-0

93 was Sunderland and Pompey, both 0-0, always remember at the home game our scoreboard either broke or the ref had had enough as he blew on 88 mins

I don't remember much about Blackpool in 77 as I was too young. I remember much more about 1985 in Division 3. The side terrace was packed full of Bolton fans long before kick off and the Kop had to be opened - we virtually filled that too. Bolton fans dotted throughout the rest of the ground too. I remember a few Blackpool fans crossing the goalmouth to try to get at the Bolton fans on the Kop. Bolton fans scaling the fences. What a dump Bloomfield Road had become. David Cross did indeed score our goal - right against the run of play. 

Two consecutive Boxing Days at Springfield Park. 1983 was our very first game against them - won 0-1 with a Chandler goal as described elsewhere. Whole ground rammed with Bolton fans - heavily outnumbering the home support. Then in 1984 Mad Gerry Mcelhinney scored a comical OG very early in the game and we lost 1-0. Big away following on the grass slopes but not all over the ground like 12 months before. 

Another Wigan memory was 92/3 when Bruce got us promoted. We'd be tanking very opponent put before us during November and December and I was super-optimistic that just for once we'd make short work of Wigan. First half we murdered them, missed a pan-full. They got a scabby opening goal just before HT. leaving everyone very disconsolate. Two glancing Andy Walker headers in the second half finally got us over the line. Our last home game v Wigan for many a year.

Didn’t Tony Kelly score his wondergoal in 92/93 ?

 

pretty sure we beat them 2-0 at their shithole.

 

In 83 and 84...loads of us in their end......they didn’t want to know after a brief flurry.

 

Come to think of it, I’ve been in the Wigan end every single time at their place.
