June 8, 20197 yr Finally decided to learn a language and seeing as my travels take me to Spanish-speaking countries a fair bit thought I’d go down that route Due to work and being away from home I can’t enrol anywhere so I’ve gone down the podcast route (coffeebreakspanish) which so far is quite good. Also Mrs Manc is arranging for a local teacher to come here once a fortnight or so Anyone else done this? And if so, can you recommend a good book to help? Want to try all different formats to try to speed my learning
June 8, 20197 yr I’m learning German via Duolingo. I have ‘Alan is a cat’ on lockdown now. i haven’t been as good at doing this daily recently but will get back to it

June 9, 20197 yr I used one called Suenos - World Spanish many moons ago. It was good but then we got a private tutor once a week and this definitely accelerated our learning and understanding of the language. She set homework and there were 4 of us doing it so that made it almost competitive and I worked far harder at it than I would have done on my own with books/cd's etc

I went to a place 20 minutes outside of Madrid earlier this year for work so not exactly rural but not really a touristy place either. No amount of talking slowly and loudly could get my point across. Trying to order a taxi in my pigeon Spanish was fun! On my second visit I commuted from Madrid

I had a set of 10 CDs that I used to listen to in the car and tried to learn that way - but didn't really kick-on with it. Reckon that's pretty much a great place to try though - especially if commuting and sitting in traffic. You can be blurting out your finest pigeon Spanish and nobody can hear or laugh at you. How much is home tuition?

Thankfully they also speak Spanish and most appreciate it when I splutter through A-Level Spanish (that I've most forgotten over the last two decades). You get a few smiles for making the effort. Agree about some of the big cities though - I try my best and some of them just reply in English...

I'm pretty competent in French, but as soon as I give it a crack over there, the locals, even in rural areas, always take the opportunity to exercise their English and upstage me. Their obsession with our language makes me think, why should us Brits even bother.

I believe you wouldn't get far in South America relying on the locals to speak English, so I'd learn if I was going there I also expected everyone in Japan to speak English but hardly anyone did
June 10, 20197 yr Michele Thomas is the guy. You can buy cd's or digital download courses. No reading or writing. No amming or issing! (You need to have done his french course). A really good way of learning, can't recommend it enough.
