Unless of course 200k of those would've died anyway and are just accelerated a few weeks by CV

All the science, mathematic models and previous history (multiple cases within the last hundred years) would say it’s not bullshit

With regards the dead anyway comment, anecdotal but....

My Mrs Nan died a couple of Xmas ago from Flu. Generally fit and well for 80, got about all over the place including abroad every year

The kids amongst the family had all picked up a flu and it spread round the whole family at the Xmas day meal. The Mrs Nan got it bad (despite a flu jab), went into Hospital and never came out (RIP Margaret)

It will kill off mainly elderly of course, but many of them won’t be at deaths door and would have lived on for many years if it wasn’t for this virus

The death rate is around 1% our leading science experts said they had a lot of faith in that. But what isn’t known yet is how many get infected before next year and hopefully a vaccine. But given their lower estimate is 40% that’s over 200,000 deaths. It’s just maths.

And to put it into perspective of you take the 1918 Spanish flus real death rate of around 8% that would be 230M deaths worldwide. And what about 7 or 8M in UK alone.

There is one in Salford, figures mustn't have been updated. Confirmed Thursday, three schools shut yesterday.

Two of the three schools are in Eccles.

One man's scientist is another.man's crank but found this quite a good summary of one point of view (some of the replies are interesting as well). There's 15 points so you need to go on twitter to read it all.

Good read

Why do people feel the need to panic and follow countries where solutions haven't worked?

Seriously?

You have changed what you are doing cos of the virus?

Fair enough, but I'm honestly not giving it a second thought

Yes and no

I'm not so concerned about me, it's my folks I'm trying to keep out of the firing line

Got a long weekend away with them next weekend

They're 74 and 78, my old man has Parkinsons and a history of pneumonia

Data from china suggests it spread most via public transport

So im not spending 4 hours on a train 2 days before i see them, even if they might die soon anyway

(It was also an unpaid day of work helping another company with a pitch, so was a good excuse to stay home and earn my own money)

We're going on a long weekend to a caravan site, we may still go, but won't be taking them to the tots disco with the little one, which would've been the highlight, because it be a room full of parent's who i reckon still aren't washing their hands properly

So still getting on with life, but minimising risk of infection where i can

I don’t think this is accurate. They are not swabbing and testing everyone anymore. I know 1 person who’s suffering all the symptoms, went through the advised process and was told to self-isolate for at least a week. Told to treat as if it is coronivurus - I don’t think they are included in the statistics.

Do you think the virus is magically different here? The numbers are established across a number of populations. You seem to be of the view that because this hasn’t happened for over a generation it can’t now. But it is. Our strategy will hopefully minimise deaths. But given the herd immunity plan it means lots getting it and sadly lots dying.

The big issue with the plan is that there is no evidence that herd immunity is effective with COVID—19. If they have evidence I’d like to see it. You can assume it is but immunity to such types of viruses typically lasts a few months. That means that technically by winter majority might not be immune.

He’s scared.

And so he should be.

Herd immunity has NEVER been achieved without the use of vaccines.

Indeed

But, every country is experimenting with this. Hopefully our experiment will work.

I hope every countries do as well

Stopped swabbing yesterday. Drive through testing centre at Waters Meeting is stopping if it's not already stopped. We've moved past that point now. Testing is only really going to happen at or in hospital or if people have deteriorated rapidly.

There are so many variables (including how the public react) that it's very, very difficult to make an accurate projection - but from where I'm sitting - those numbers look at least plausible if not probable.

If we get things right - we save thousands of lives, potentially tens of thousands. But there's no real precedent for this in recent history.
