The Cost Of Living Crisis

Anyone felt the pinch yet?

Notice a good proportion of my hotels are quiet this week. But with the jubilee round the corner and pride the week after maybe folk are simply saving their trips for that.

Cant help but feel the media are driving a lot of it. They seem hell bent on us heading into a recession. Making people panic and stop spending.

They should be telling everyone its all gravy.

Only area Ive felt it is diesel. £154 to fill my van the other day. That's taking the piss.

Thing is, if I found a bathroom fitter with availability right now I’d wonder why. If he’s unavailable for 4 or 5 months you know he’s good because he’s busy.

I’m currently having my bathroom future-proofed. Bath now gone and walk-in shower in. Nobody used the bath other than for a shower anyway.

I have waited for him since August.

We're thinking of doing that, been in this house for just over 2 years, and we've never used the bath

Hence the importance of helping Ukraine kick the buggers out.

Get back to normal ASAP.

Agreed, sadly, I really can see it lasting for several more years.

Crikey

The highest price rise was seen in Hungary at nearly 50 per cent, Lithuania the second highest with 33.5 per cent followed by Estonia with 30.8 per cent.

No chance of that at the moment. Whichever way its painted, Rishi wants that furlough money back.

Maybe he can ask for all the millions his mates gave to their mates for bent PPE contracts and lordships?

Got some back, not going to get it all.

Those who actually supplied proper products, fair enough.

The amount still pales into insignificance when looked at as a whole.

I'll repeat what a business said to me at the start of it all:

"I don't agree with furlough... we'll be paying it back for decades..."

I didn't entirely agree with his sentiment, but his point about payback is very valid.

The debate about the best way to repay the borrowings will go on and on, but they seem determined to keep taxation high for a while yet. Whether that's right or wrong, folk will argue continually.

Can't help feeling it's a bit too much at the moment, and the rise in corporation tax soon I reckon is a big mistake.

I'm not sure that the opposition would do anything significantly different neither, so we're essentially stuck with it for a bit.

Without furlough my other halves business would have folded and they are the independent entrepreneurs people seem to want to protect.

Back to @Casino’s question about Morrisons being short staffed. They’re 36 staff members down in 18 months. Problem is, the ones leaving are the ones with the experience and knowledge of the job are the ones disenfranchised with poor management.

Without lockdown, we wouldn’t have needed furlough. Perhaps the biggest mistake in anyone’s memory? History will advise.

What was the alternative?

Good question. I always wondered as it was happening, it never felt right. Did it have to happen? Perhaps the first, but after that we knew a lot more about the disease. I remain of the view that it should have been possible to  protect the vulnerable and the rest of society should have been more able to continue pretty much as normal.

One day, perhaps, we’ll understand why they happened and what other potential courses of action were considered, and why they were dismissed.

History needs to be sure it is accurate. In that it judges the lockdown decision on the facts as they were in February 2020.

Gudjohnson will probably always regret passing to Holdsworth at Wembley, but in that moment, it was the only option that really made sense.

It depends on the aim

If the aim was to stem the spread of a virus in the absence of vaccines and testing, it was the only credible option

Even when used in a half decent analogy, it should be a mandatory week long ban for bringing this up.

So you’re beginning to think the government got it wrong?

That, and Generation Entitlement.

Chris Green needs to start tidying his CV up 😁

I don’t know about research; research what? Reading and thinking, mostly.

I do find it interesting that so many who detest this government seem happy to side with them on lockdown.

Not often I say this, but I agree with RW.
