The Cost Of Living Crisis

Anyone felt the pinch yet?

Notice a good proportion of my hotels are quiet this week. But with the jubilee round the corner and pride the week after maybe folk are simply saving their trips for that.

Cant help but feel the media are driving a lot of it. They seem hell bent on us heading into a recession. Making people panic and stop spending.

They should be telling everyone its all gravy.

Only area Ive felt it is diesel. £154 to fill my van the other day. That's taking the piss.

She must be on 25/30k?

Living at home could surely live on 6k for the year?

That's probably 20k in the bank in 12 months. More than enough for a deposit.

So what's going wrong?

Do teachers not pay tax?

Ah.

Touché...

Although, I'm not disagreeing with the overall point. But I am genuinely interested to know if its as simple as saying that it's unaffordable or if there is an element of choosing to spend elsewhere?

Feel free to adjust the above to account for tax.

Daft thing is, she has no issue with her salary

Happy enough to be sat watching love island marking books at 10pm

Says its fair enough so long as I dont tell her shes always on holiday. :)

but, whats gone wrong

20 years back me and the missus could afford to rent and save for a 10% deposit for a house in 2 years  on teacher's salaries.

No way that's happening now.

Age of entitlement my arse.

She will be reet but shes lucky to live in the N of the country

How do you do that in the SE

Should a single teacher be able to buy a decent house with a garden or do they have to live with mum n dad forever

My lad was 30 last month and he's still at ours.

He has, however, just landed a new job in Melbourne, so he's off to Oz later this year. His older sister is already there and Junior is off to Uni in September and then the nest will finally be (temporarily) empty.

You stone age dinosaurs (I'm playing catch up) had it easy.

What was average pay as a percentage of average house prices when you bought?

Without a massive leg up from the bank of mum and dad, my nipper isn't getting on the property ladder anytime soon.

And point me in the direction of the government department paying mortgages. I'd like some of that thanks very much

Yet more use of the 'tard' suffix.

Difficult to compare. People like to though. One thing I’d point out from your post, must people didn’t jump on the ladder at average price range. Started low and worked their/our way up. Most people also had joint mortgages with partners. Everything I see nowadays, is individuals complaining. I never knew any Individual who bought a property on a single salary when I was younger.

How many had cars like they do now? How many had multiple holidays like they do now? What about the eating out most weekends? Designer clothes? Bling watches?

As I said above, difficult to compare. I got engaged at 18 and spent the next 3 years saving up with my gf. Once a month, we had a night out in Manc and then Davardis😊 The test of the time, tv every night at ours or hers. I also had 2 part time jobs.
Got married at 21, 95% mortgage at 7.8%

The house I bought in Adlington today is around £160,000.

Is that price of house really out of the reach of a couple today if they did what I did?

As you mentioned earlier most couples started small and worked their way up, I know my parents did and it’s what I have done. It seems many people think they are just going to jump into a 3/4 bed detached straight away. Doesn’t quite work like that.

I was speaking to BB Jnr yesterday,  my lad was training on the same pitches 👍

Think that what GD was talking about before he got shouted down. Again.

I’ve looked everywhere but I cannot find a house for £20,000 or a 5 year old Vauxhall Nova for under £500.

These days, you just can’t live in the past like you used to

However, we don’t have to do what the French and Belgians tell us anymore, so we’re heading in the right direction.

Just because you’ve reached retirement age and Thatchers policies enabled you to make a killing on your house, doesn’t mean you’ve “earned” it.

You were simply fortunate enough to live through a period when housing basically became the means by which wealth was judged.

The blame lies squarely at the feet of Thatch and Blair.

Yet another brainless comment from the one who thinks he’s soooo clever. Why don’t you just try, just for once, to respond with a half intelligent comment instead of constantly proving how thick you are?

Try working for a housing provider like my step-daughter trying to help folk with their arrears. Help, not chase. Help

Its criminal that the following have become so much more expensive apparently so no way can they afford to pay the rent any more

  • Broadband
  • SKY
  • Netflix
  • Mobile charges
  • Lease costs on a new car cos who wants to buy an old banger
  • Meals out
  • Games consoles and the games
  • "Proper clothes" cos who wants their kid to look like a pov when the other kids in school have designer

Some folk are beyond help. Feel sorry for the genuine ones who get tarred with the same brush. There's decent folk out there really struggling. There's also a load of entitled scumbags

This.

I assume they will pay some board to their parents and maybe a loan for a car to get to work and back. Add in the usual like actually having a life then I am sure there is some left over for savings.

Once they get to £20k deposit, will a lender give them the rest?

Well.

I got as far as point 10 and couldn't take any more, sorry.

Point 1 and 2, the biggies...

1 happened while we were still under EU rules, even acknowledged in the article. Also folk seem to forget that jabbing folk a few weeks earlier than others didn't actually matter, it was getting to mass vaccination rates that mattered and in the end most western countries ended up fairly similar.

2 is also something allowed in the EU, again in the article. Why did we not have Freeports sooner? It's almost like they are scrabbling around for something to justify Brexit.

The rest is the usual low regulation libertarian nonsense that ignores what the majority of the population actually wants and puts the interests of business above all else.

The EU is far from perfect of course and things like fishing quotas and CAP were not ideal for the UK but overall we were better off in than out.
