The M6.

Has to be the most depressing, accident ridde, piece of shit motorway in the whole of Great Britain if not Europe.

3 times since Friday its been complete gridlock between Broughton and Knutsford.

Same every fucking week.

On the bright side, M6 north of the M55 is wonderful.

  • Absolutely. I said at the time some bugger has done a cost analysis of deaths against movement of traffic and judged extra folk dying is a price worth paying. Fucking stinks.

20/20 but it was good to test them out.

One of the reasons I don't get up so often now is the bloody M6 fills me with dread (literally).

Worst one was coming back from a game a while back, it ground to a halt just north of Stoke and everything was at standstill for 4+ hours. At one point a bloke in the car behind got his prayer mat out and started praying in the middle lane! I thought, if we start moving straight after this I'm converting!

Some poor sod in front of me (we were all milling round chatting - bit of Dunkirk spirit really) had to carry on to Cornwall after it eventually moved.

Turned out there'd been bad smashes both ahead of us and just south coming in the opposite direction as well. So not police's fault (and when it started to open up up, some of them were going from car to car waking old folk up!). But bloody hell...

But any match day journey you just know you'll get caught.

I can't remember what I had for tea yesterday, never mind that 😄

Probably towards the back end of the PL times, so we probably didn't win!

Sat Nav on is sending me via M6 this morning rather than A1 M62, says it will save me 5 minutes. Tempted to ignore it following the comments on here.

Regularly in meetings in Solihull that start at 10.00/10.30. I always stay over the night before now. Was leaving at 6am and either getting there 2 hours early or an hour or so late

Was travelling Brum few weeks back car cut out on the outside Lane near congleton  managed to navigate across to the inside Lane before car stopped, no hard shoulder, so stuck in lane 1 with cars swerving past me after couple of minutes Morrisons lorry was heading towards me at full speed, had to open my window and flap my arms before he noticed me, absolute fucking death trap these safe motorways. Get on any petitions you see to ban them.

M62 near Leeds and M42 south of Brum I was massively for these smart motorways due to a huge difference in travel times. Seen too much scary shit on the M6 recently. Stuff similar to mounts. Changed my opinion. Get rid asap. Fuck it I’d rather sit in a jam than watch someone die

First smart motorway (proper one) opened in 2006.

I'll let you do the maths.

I think smart motorways work on short busy sections like M42 round Birmingham. But large sections of motorway without much more regular refuge sections are dangerous imo.

What maths? And why would I need to do any?

Never mind the M6, coming back on the A1/M1 yesterday in two places it was backed up to the levels of folk wandering around out of their cars etc

Getting away from Vale was no bed of roses on Saturday either.

M42 was built with refuge areas very 500m or so plus overhead gantries very km. Plus it was Dynamic Hard shoulder Running - they could revert back to having the hard shoulder with an Red X and the hard shoulder still has a permanent white line to separate it.  All that followed were built with fewer refuge areas/farther apart and some e.g parts of M6 J20 south and M62 were built All Lane Running with no hard shoulder at all.  Saved money by building fewer refuge areas and was quicker to do (which also saved money).  Cameras and A Red X are supposed  to protect stranded vehicles on these, but VMS signs and gantries are too far apart.

Used it last Sunday, was quicker to get from London to Durham than London to Bolton, clear as a bell.

Fucking joke, isn't it.
Going to severely compromise my efforts too.

  • 3 weeks later...

First weekend of the M6 closure J33-J32 Southbound and the 16 mile diversion down the A6...

Traffic currently backed up to J35 at Carnforth, taking 3hrs from J35 to M55. Now hoping the game is off next Saturday too.

I know it's a trek, but what about the back roads: trough of Bowland etc down past Clitheroe area?

Done it once or twice, but it might at least keep moving.

I did that a few weeks back after a crash on M6 and it wasn't good. Those roads are narrow and were too busy. It took bloody ages and the motorway was still open then (down to one lane) so Christ knows what they would have been like.

Best to just avoid if possible. I bet those who live anywhere near the A6 between Preston and Carnforth are having a right mare getting about.
