The flags were hung directly under the street lighting. They’d have been removed regardless of the colour. It’s reasonable health & safety practice not to encourage it on a mass scale. 

Whilst the Wilmslow rd gathering is temporarily disruptive. It’s relatively peaceful. Unless I’ve missed something? 

Nobody is stopping VJ Day celebrations taking place. And if a group decides to gather on mass spontaneously and celebrate on a street like that, they wouldn’t be stopped immediately. Likely the police went in to encourage the safe re - opening of Wilmslow rd. I doubt the council will have permitted the rd closure, it looks like it got too big. Much harder for a council to respond to that in the same way as the flags. Likely they will look at ways to keep it safer in the future.
 

This isn’t a case of a two tier approach to flags and celebrations.

 Just more nonsense being peddled that British patriots are being cancelled. Often by snowflakes, who behind their tears, are actually free to celebrate their nationality & gather peacefully in whatever way they choose.

It isn't beyond the capabilities of folk to ensure that any such celebrations can be achieved sensibly and safely; eg ensure any flags are small enough to ensure safety.

Whether the reasoning is politically motivated or simply insensitive incompetence, it is terrible optics.

They've lit the library up in colours of other nations' flags by means of celebration too- from what I understand, they haven't done similar for VJ day.

The key word there is manage 

The Council or whoever put the flags up, knowing exactly the size, how they should be hung, where they are exactly and then take them down afterwards etc 

Folk putting them up whatever size, how they want and where they want then not bothering to take them down can cause a problem
