out of interest was just looking into this some more

Israel competes in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) primarily due to political circumstances that led to its expulsion from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

Here's a breakdown of the key reasons and timeline:

1) AFC Membership and Boycotts: The Israeli Football Association (IFA) was a member of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) from 1954 to 1974. However, due to the Arab–Israeli conflict, many Arab and Muslim countries refused to play against Israel, leading to frequent boycotts in AFC competitions.

2) Expulsion from AFC: In 1974, a resolution proposed by Kuwait was passed by the AFC, resulting in Israel's expulsion from the confederation.

3) Years in the "Wilderness": For almost two decades, the Israeli national team was left without a continental governing body. During this time, they occasionally participated in FIFA World Cup qualifiers within the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) and sometimes UEFA or CONMEBOL (South America) qualifying tournaments, traveling vast distances. Israeli clubs also competed in the UEFA-affiliated Intertoto Cup from 1976.

4) Joining UEFA: In the early 1990s, the political climate allowed Israel to begin aligning with Europe for football.

1991: Israeli clubs started participating in European club competitions.

1992: Israel was admitted to UEFA as an associate member, and the national team began competing in the European leg of World Cup qualifying.

1994: Israel received full UEFA membership, which is where they have remained ever since.

Essentially, the move to UEFA was a solution to a political problem, ensuring that Israel's national and club teams could consistently compete in regular international football tournaments.

Points 1 and 2....Arabs and Muslims objecting to playing Israel.....fast forward to the current day.....
