Totally agreed.

Social media has given voice to folk who previously were not given a platform.

Complete shite

Who decides who should and shouldn't be given a platform?

Lots and lots of nastiness on it, but leave those bits alone.

However, at what point is the "moral outrage" simply a tool to be used by those who don't want their narrative challenging?

The very essence of why the country is where it is currently.

The narrative from the daft fucker who used to come out with shite in the Hare and Hounds used to go no further.

But put his spoutings onto the world wide web...

And this is happening globally, so many people shouting out yet saying nothing

You do realise that would include yourself as well?

It's like everything really, the vast majority are sensible and well behaved but there is always a minority that spoils things for everyone.

The problem with social media is not providing a platform for everyone but rather people believe any old shit they see wanting it to be true and being too stupid or lazy to check out if it real is or just lies (or half truths).

Then they get 'fed' more and more by the algorithms that 'drive' social media, of the stuff they 'like' until all they are 'fed' that exclusively.

They end up in...

An echo chamber: is an environment—such as a social media feed, online community, or specific social group—where individuals are primarily exposed to opinions, beliefs, and information that reinforce their own, while opposing views are minimized, ignored, or excluded.

...and are surrounded on all sides with...

Confirmation bias: is the psychological tendency to favour, seek out, and interpret information that aligns with your existing beliefs, while ignoring or discrediting contradictory evidence. It acts as a mental filter, shaping how you acquire, interpret, and remember information.

The end result being people are in effect being 'brainwashed'., manipulated, played, controlled - call it whatever you will - but the end result is that people just see one side of the story and reject out of hand anything different to their now set in stone belief's.

Brainwashing: is the systematic manipulation of a person's thoughts, beliefs, or attitudes.

Its Primary Characteristics

  • Isolation: Cutting a person off from former associates, independent information, and reality checks. (basically what Confirmation bias is all about).

  • Repetition: The relentless reinforcement of a specific doctrine. (basically echo chambers do).

My advice if anyone is interested is basically disbelieve anything you read on social media until you check its authenticity for yourself first.

(that btw includes everything I say too).

Sluffy you’re giving me a migraine mate

And I thought my posts could get long. We don’t need half the Oxford dictionary included with every post.

This is why I stilĺ use a dumb-phone, do not have an x or whatsapp account, avoid you tube and facebook and still read newspapers (fyi I alternate between the Times and Guardian)... in my opinion rolling news encourages the traits you refer to, I prefer to mull things over. I also subscribe to several established printed publications.

I have come to enjoy this site as it lets me bounce ideas off other folk while offering my opinion on others' thoughts... and we can still talk that about footie at the end of the day.

Well in this instance I believe it was essential to show as simply as I know how to, how manipulation of people via social media happens.

I know that you are aware of "confirmation bias" and "echo chambers" but most people aren't and would never dream to bother themselves to find out about such things - that's why I put it up there for everyone to read.

I'm sorry if I gave you a migraine - I don't think I did though really did I(?) - which if I didn't, kind of underlies my other point about not believing everything that is said on social media.

Did I waste my time posting what I did in my previous post, maybe I did, but if it caused just one person to stop and think, then I would say it was all worth it..

Wouldn't you?

I agree with everything you posted but I think you can and possibly should also see when someone is telling a little joke and treat it as such.

There's plenty on here never mind across the rest of the UK and world, who didn't and still don't understand how social media works and how the algorithms are designed to "feed" you what you want to see and hear.

Add in that lunatic Musk with X and it shows how dangerous it can get. That is why good honest journalism is still very much needed today.

Harbone and Delo are both in for 25mill, no wonder Nidge is proposing a reduction in capital gains tax on crypto.

Then Musk is into Lowe for £72k and about to increase... yet legislation foĺlowing the recent Rycroft Review has excluded donations from social media platforms.

All incompetent and dishonest in my opinion and a massive enema is needed.

As opposed to the whiter than white Labour and Conservative parties I presume....I had best not forget the Greens as i wouldnt wish to appear biased in any way.

Well good for you, I'm pleased that you found a way that works for you.

Unfortunately most people these days live on their phones and clearly those in power around the world wants to control all the media we view, such as social media, Main Stream Media, TV, streaming, cable and everything else we view on,

The state is the main actor in autocratic countries such as Russia, China, Iran, and in the west by the very, very wealthy - think Musk with Twitter, Vance threating us to stop legislating against social media in respect of AI child pornography and such like - why because it effect the billionaire owners bottom lines.

An American friend of mine recently sent me this in respect of Trumps virtual take over of the control of US network broadcasting, streaming and the The Federal Communications Agency (FCC) - the government regulator.

First, blame the American television network, ABC (Disney), for capitulating and paying him off on a frivolous lawsuit. Then, the cowardly network, CBS, paid off for an even more frivolous (and legally losing) lawsuit. Thereafter, the cowardly billionaires of Oracle, the Ellisons, finalized their purchase of Paramount and CBS... with the blessings of the mafia Don himself. Months later, the same Ellisons are attempting to purchase Discovery and CNN. Netflix who had a bid accepted, somehow dropped out after a meeting with Trump, who obviously put his thumb on the scale. Without his approval, the take-over would be nixed. Unsurprisingly, Netflix dropped out, and surprise, the Ellisons announced they were the winners of this prize. Allegedly, the billionaires still needed Middle East oil money to consummate the deal. A long and winding road, and Joseph Goebbels would be proud of these fascist take-overs of the media. Along with Musk taking over X, and the Ellisons running CBS and CNN, there is Sinclair, which has purchased a total of 295 local stations. Surprise, they are a right-wing group as well. The overseer of the airwaves, the FCC, continues to change the ownership rules to favor Trump's favorites... in this case, the Sinclair network. At the same time, the Trump-appointed FCC boss has decided to try and take away the licenses from ABC stations, because comedian Jimmy Kimmel upset the mob boss. We are living in a universe where the inmates are running the asylum.

Democracy is going through a hard time these days unfortunately.

I didn't for one moment believed I'd given him a migraine and I wasn't calling him a liar but rather just using it as an example how people should not believe everything they read as being gospel.

I stand by the rest of my post though, if people like me don't try to open peoples eyes as to what things like "Confirmation Bias" and "Echo Chambers" are, then how will they ever find out that there's more to social media than pictures of fluffy kittens?

Fair enough but it was a really poor example as it was completely obviously not gospel and a little joke.

Aye.

72K.

Every party has donors.

So long as they're legal and above board, then why the concern?

If the rules need modernising, legitimately, then so be it.

Otherwise, just get on with it.

The very essence of why the country is where it is currently.

Or social media being use to push a narrative.

Look at the cunt owns the predominant social media network and the narratives he’s pushing.

Can take the boy out of apartheid…………blah blah blah.

What the fuck have you been drinking again??......I merely pointed out that all the major parties are corrupt in one form or another but obviously your urgency to paint yourself as a righteous , liberal keyboard warrior got the better of you again.

I'm not blind, I've always seen you for the sad, needy, attention seeking soul that you are......neither am I ignorant but i dont feel the need to be controversial for the sake of it or randomly spew out unfounded bullshit and name calling to try and make myself relevant.

I have entered into discussions on here with people with differing politics and opinions to my own and have found common ground and if not agreed with them have listened to their point of view.

The likes of you and your polar opposites on the right are what are dragging this country further into the mire.

Was always going to end this way.

more accurate to say they made this happen

Exactly. It was, is and will be up to the main political parties to stop or ideally prevent these real problems which are affecting the country and its law abiding citizens (of all backgrounds). If not then history tells us less salubrious individuals and parties will emerge to exploit the problems and create divisions all in the name of personal gain. Time is running out for Labour or the Tories to convince people that they can make their lives better, so they don’t have to resort to the lies of Reform/Restore who ironically will only make their lives worse.
