I'd not say Randall is similar in any way to either Sheehan or Morley.

We coveted Randall for a year or so. Utube him and he looks like a forward running, tricky and pacey winger. The version we've seen camps out near the half way line, rarely runs forward and has no pace or confidence. Similar to McAtee, I'm not sure what his best position is or what role IE intended to best play him. We'll never know...

Play off hotel was cancelled at 4.30pm, the bunch of wankers.

How we were level at half time was a mystery, that first 30 minutes genuinely looked like we’d had an illness through the team the night before and we had to play a combination of kids and half fit pros. I know we’ve got some injuries but it was embarrassing how poor we were.

We then managed to get ourselves back in it by some miracle, you’d think that would see us come out bang up for it in the second half but once again we were just weak as piss and looked like a team fighting for relegation.

Let’s be honest, it was just another example of all the issues we know this squad / team has. Nothing is surprising now, we’re well versed in it all, it’s just frustrating to see it all happen once again.

That 3rd goal summed it up for me. Poor defending down the left, Cogley then gets back in position and actually does well to win the ball back, he then misplaces a 3 yard pass and tees their lad up for the cross, we don’t get out to it with any kind of urgency so it’s a piece of piss for him to put a good ball in, Johnston gets beat in the air by an old school centre forward who knows this league well.

We’re complaining it’s a foul and we’ve been hard done by but it’s just part of being in league one, it’s weak, sometimes you don’t get them cause refs are shit, but don’t get yourself in that position in the first place, don’t get bullied, and if you do have a bit of intelligence to make a fucking meal of it, other players should be round the ref, make it hard for him not to rule it out. Instead we just fucking sulked and felt sorry for ourselves whilst Collins is off pissing himself at how easy it was to bully our centre half.

More than anything we need to fill this team / squad with pace, power, height, physicality and leadership. It seems to be accepted that this squad has ‘talent’ (I’m not sure, I think we’re full of very average footballers), but without the above we will continue to be a league one football team. Thankfully it’s clear that SS knows exactly that.

No chance I’m watching any more of us now. Season is done. Golf course awaits and I’ll start taking notice when I see that we start shipping out some of the shit bastards in the summer. What a shit shit season (other than finally beating Wigan).

Here‘s to winning the league next season with a team of giants!

Our collapse from that great run we had has been staggering.

When we beat Birmingham and Burton I started to think 2nd place was on !!

And here we are looking like we'll finish around 10th.

I know we've had a load of injuries but it's been pathetic hasn't it.

Thought 3rd goal was a foul but a soft one, so no real argument with the ref letting it go, it's not the first time GJ has been done like that.

We'd love a forward like that letting centre halves know they are there wouldn't we ?

Another case of watching the other team and wishing we had a player like that. Think it was @gonzo who mentioned that earlier, its nearly every bloody game 🤦‍♂️

Personally think there’s a more than reasonable shout that he shouldn’t have been back defending a set piece anyway. Stick him on the halfway line and it automatically draws back a couple of defenders, whilst also giving us an immediate outlet on the rare occasions we’re not picking the ball out of the back of the net.

It seems basic doesn't it?  A real head scratcher that successive managers choose to invite pressure by bringing everyone back.  But definitely an SS tactic, certainly not Big Dave's decision, its every corner, whoever the strikers are.  The 11 back (free kick rather than corner) cost us another pen at Reading too.  Strikers being asked to defend - and McAtee is the worst culprit - what a surprise it costs us possession and occasionally leads directly to goals conceded.

You'd wonder, having worked out that the likes of McAtee and Collins are liabilities in their own box, it'd be worth trying something revolutionary and getting them out of the way, one on halfway and the other round the edge of the box.

I’d love one! Not even with the idea that they play every minute of every game, just to give us a good option to play that way. I want Jordan Hugill in the summer, that 20 mins that he had against us for Rotherham the other week showed me exactly what I want from one of our 4 striking options next season!

Yep.

As a "big un" though, maybe he's expected to help.

All our forwards are naff at tackles though.

Whether SS was making a point or not, the young fella hasn't disgraced himself, particularly considering the form, confidence and commitment being shown by so many supposedly ahead of him.

Nothing to do with size, Charles came back for every corner.  Its always 11 back, under IE or SS.

If we do go for a 4231 next year.

In the 31 part i can see Randall in that AM role and Collins as a sort of winger/ striker in the Diouf role to the right.

Playing Collins as an out an out striker and Randall in a similar role to Morley and Sheehan, has just been crippling them.

I understand why this has been the case for SS as we need someone to fill those roles with injuries, has to change in the summer.

A new Centre back. Midfielder, wingback and striker/s made of scrap yard dog material, please.

Assuming we go to Schumacher’s preferred back four, full backs are a priority.

I'm hoping Matete is back with us in August, there's a good chance we'll be even weaker without him.

We need much better than Matete, in my opinion.

I'd love us to get far better than Matete, eg Brannagan, I'd just be amazed if we could attract (and afford) someone of that standard.  Unless maybe a top loan player like Bang Average or Barry (ex-Stockport).

I'm struggling to come up with names of decent L1 midfielders TBH, I could list a lot of strikers that would improve us but not midfielders.  Maybe SS has some lined up from his Plymouth/Stoke days, happy to see what he can come up with.

So who's out of contract and who are we stuck with.

Attracting and affording better players is really tough. Half the league next year with fancy their chances at a promotion push. Plus each season we don't go up there are 3 championship teams coming down with relatively big budgets to compete with. That's where, hopefully SS and the new recruitment team can work their magic. Rather than buying champs level players from EFL, maybe 1 or 2 could come in from Europe or Scotland, for example?...

It'll all start to become clearer in a few weeks, once all the promotion and relegation issues are decided, and, for example, the likes of Leeds and Burnley may have players on the fringe as they add to their squads with Prem performers, equally the Ipswich's and Leicester's may look to move one or two on as they reshape for the Championship.

Our DoF may also, of course, have knowledge of good potential recruits from Belgium or other neighbouring leagues

I was thinking this before. I’ve got nothing to back it up that Randall is the right player for that spot, but if he’s going to work then it’ll be in the centre of that 3 behind the striker.

In my mind it’s something like

Big bastard keeper

New bastard - Forino/Forrester - Big bastard - new bastard

Morley - Big Angry Bastard

Fast bastard - Randall - Collins

Big bastard

So a team of bastards then 😁👍

We can't afford to write Randall off completely. And to be fair to him, he's turned up here mid-season to absolute fucking chaos. I'm sure he'll be better next season. Good enough to justify what we paid? Who knows but that money's gone now.

No chance he's a central midfielder, but I think he could work in the team of bastards you've laid out there.

No it isn’t to do with size, its ability and positioning. I watched Burnley play Sheffield Utd earlier (Congrats to the Clarets)  and whilst United were bigger by player they got nowhere because Burnley’s defenders were just better even though smaller. It just really showed how far we have to go to get anywhere close to that level and how essential it is that we bring in players of that quality in the summer.

Tbf he never was at Peterborough.

I remember people calling Kieran Sadlier rubbish, when he was being forced to play right wing back as a winger. He'll be playing in the championship next year.

The reason we do that 11 at the back thing is to try and take advantage of stamina given we have a young team. SS is basically playing a form of early Evatt ball because he has no choice due to the physical quality of the players at hand.

Majority of these losers can go for me. In disbelief that we’ve given Cogley an extra year but I suppose he’s ok for back-up. Fully expect Conway to step up next season, even possibly Abimbola and Ahmed.. at the very least they should be sent out on similar loans as Conway.

I don’t think we’ll have any issue offloading Nlundulu who might even return to Cambridge should they go down. Will be over the moon to see the back of Jones who is diabolical, his defending for Barnsley’s 3rd goal the other week was embarrassing.

Sad to see Baxter and Santos leaving but the it needs to happen and will free up a good chunk of wages.

Go all out for Connell as the midfield general and try to poach Mothersille/Ricky jones off Peterborough. One of those two will top league one scoring charts next season mark my words.

I’d also like to add that I think Randall will thrive next season, he’s been dropped into an absolute shitshow but has been superb for Peterborough over the years.

Sure they said in the commentary that Burnley had conceded a Championship record of just 15 goals 😳. Puts our 68 or whatever in context.

Similarly Keith Hill said on the radio after the game that we could sign better centre halves and they would still look exposed in our system (and he knows his onions 😉)

Of course he did.

Nevertheless, as a big lad he would be seen as useful to combat big lads trying to get on the end of set pieces.

That isn't unique to us: big centre forwards have frequently been used to provide defensive assistance in such circumstances; because of their size.

What is weird, is the fact that no one is left up the pitch: Collins for example, who could provide an out ball.

That is basic common sense football.
