Quitting the booze

Allen Carr (not the goofy “comedian”) writes books about how to stop drinking and/or smoking.

My sister read it a few years back and, whilst she want a full on alky, was overdoing the booze.

After reading this book, she hasn’t touched a drop since. Not one.

So, as a challenge, I said I’d read the book and prove that this kind of thing doesn’t really work and that she was just ready to stop anyway.

about 2 weeks ago, I reached just over the halfway point. Since then, I’ve probably had 2 pints and one glass of wine, none of which I particularly enjoyed.

I’m annoyed for several reasons:

* I adore a drink, and I feel the pleasure has been stolen from me

* My sister was right and I was wrong about the book

* I feel somehow invaded by this author who I never invited into my life in the first place.

* I want a beer, but don’t want a beer. It’s fucking WEIRD.

I need help in getting back on the horse.

Im not going to preach, but if you really want to kick the booze (he does fags as well), then I’m here to tell you, brothers and sisters, that this fucker works.

Looks nice

We’re off there in June

Bucket list has always included a fortnight in the Napa Valley. It hangs by a thread….

The lads in the bottling area were on dinner break when we went.

The Mrs being suspicious google earthed it afterwards - the main factory is behind a load of trees.

Tight bastards didn’t even give us a drop to try after the tour. Fuckin lemonade was all we got

We did taster tour where you get 4 small shots to try

I'd like to have tried more

Probably doesn't help it's a dry county

Lemonade's better than JD, you were lucky

I'm sure @BobyBrnowill confirm, but isn't it actually still brewed at the original brewery that's about 100miles south of Prague, fairly close to the German border.

They are though, as you say, still not swallowed up and massed produced all over the place by the major global players

It’s a long story but Budweiser Budvar is brewed in Ceske Budejovice.
Any foreign beer sold in this country could be brewed here. Always check the label.

I told the story at the start of lockdown. Staropramen beer (my favourite in CZ) sold in bottles here is brewed in the U.K.

At the time, Sainsburys did their own Czech beer brewed at the Staropramen brewery in Prague!

When I first worked in Breda as a green 20 year old I got took under wing of the nobhead office pisscan. Knowing no better we drank 2 DAB bottles in a pint glass (maybe 500ml really) that we topped up with the 2nd bottle. That didn't last long, I've never had as bad headaches before or since that little 9 day spell.

You put me onto that Sainsbury’s one and it was one of the best lagers I’ve ever had. Don’t think they do it anymore.

Nope. We must have exhausted their limited stocks.😊

I stopped drinking back in April, I was drinking far too much, I was at a wedding and was drinking 2 pints to everyone else's one and just thought "what the fuck am I  doing"....From that point ive been sober as a judge, the cravings took about 6 weeks to disappear now It doesnt even bother me going out with mates and not drinking.....I wish losing weight was this easy but that's my next challenge.

Fair play and all that to people who quit/really cut down for health reasons.

I can't help buy think about Billy Connolly with his bread story - eat brown bread instead of white, it could add years to your life. Fantastic if you're 20 and shagging fit birds. Not so good as a dribbling 84 year old.

My cut down of booze is due to being useless the day after a session. Saturdays I still have a good go at it.

Not as good as I once was, but as good once as I always was

Jack Daniels is rank. The shittest of all the bourbons (with the honourable exception of  a bourbon I bought from Aldi last Christmas that was buffalo piss mixed with turps. Youri would have liked it).

Kentucky bourbons are a much better drop. As I recall, like.

The standard JD is poor but the Single Barrel is a nice drop of bourbon.

Nowt wrong with standard JD imo. Nowt special but eminently drinkable on ice

Gentleman Jack is the daddy. Can already see one under the tree from my youngest

Would really love to like Single Barrel but for some reason it gives me really bad heartburn

Kentucky bourbons? No, no and no again. Mainstream ones are awful. Make me clench my teeth. Makers Mark is the only one that I wouldn’t pour on a rusty padlock to get it working again. That said there are some smaller distilleries that rank up there like Redbreast in Ireland that absolutely blow you away. Wish I could remember what they are.

Finished off a Chattanoogan bourbon tonight, a lovely drop. Pisses all over most bourbons I've had

Went to a wedding in Kentucky night before the bride and groom put a free bar on in bar that specialised in local  Bourbon cocktails. They were awful.
Wedding was 7pm next day and one lad having flown from UK missed it as was still being sick.

We are all over 55 !

Gentlemen Jack in Sainburys at £20 if you’re brave enough to venture there today.

Called for a beer on way home last night for my solo works do :D

This is where my problems lie. All I can think about this morning is when I can get back on it.

Forced two beers down last night.

would normally have turned in to 6/7/8

Don’t read the book. Don’t do it.

This thread has made me think long and hard but have decided in the new year it's finally time to give up reading
