  1. If Brook hadn't got out on 87 the declaration would probably not been made for a few more overs, and they may well have not had time to clinch the win.
  2. First time in a test where all four openers have scored a first innings century.
  3. She is William Waldegrave's elder sister.
  4. It's a fuller picture than I've seen or heard elsewhere and is straight from the declaration. I'm not trying to paint a picture of anything but the truth. If you look at the figures the Labour drop can be seen as a combination of by-election apathy plus antipathy to the resigned member's party. The Conservative drop cannot be explained away. You don't need to be a frontline psephologist to say that if an election is called now there will a mahoosive Labour majority.
  5. Labour vote down from 27,082 to17,309. Conservative vote down from 20,918 to 6,335.
  6. He stood for Hammersmith & Fulham Council - not Parliament, unless you know more.
  7. I thought it was much earlier, having kicked off an hour before all the other matches. It was a 9 goal match too.
  8. No. Wales's population is lower, for one, and Qatar for another.
  9. Not many HKers will return, but they really have to be accommodated after UK gave HK back to China with unenforcible promises which were always, always going to be disregarded. Not MT's finest hour.
  10. 1.1M arrived, of which 750K from outside EU, so 350K from inside EU. 600K left with around 300K re-locating back to EU, (and around 300K going elsewhere). So no more EUers leaving than coming? Even allowing for significant rounding in estimates, these figures do not demonstrate, or even suggest, than net migration from EU has dropped.
  11. Half the staff have been dismissed and three-quarters of the rest are not staying. Musk is used to dealing with experts in niche projects with tremendous commitment. He is expecting the highly marketable software engineers to do the same. They won't.
  12. No it's not from additional contributions - it is from SERPS (State Earnings-Related Pension Scheme). When illusionist George Osborne persuaded the populace he was increasing the basic state pension considerably he neatly ignored the removal of additional pensions and second state pension. Since addition contributions were allowed to top up for a couple of years this blurred the picture even further.
  13. The basis state pension is often regarded as the maximum ... but there is also the Pre-'97 additional state pension (less a contracted-out deduction), Post-'97 additional state pension and graduated retirement benefit. Furthermore, since the contracted-out deduction increases at a lower interest rate than the other elements, my increase will be almost 10.4% overall and my weekly state pension will exceed £250 per week. If I had not been contracted out into a personal pension for 17 years my new pension would be over £300p.w, As it is I was able to take a cash lump sum of over £17,000 and invest over £50k in an annuity increasing at 8.5 %p.a.
  14. My state pension for 2023-24 will exceed my Personal Allowance (this despite having been opted out for many years, without which my SP would be a lot higher). The SP will still be less than a quarter of my total pension/annuity income.
  15. Energy companies have been set a target of 85% conversion by end of 2024, which I think has been extended. They want to avoid bad publicity by failing to meet expectations. If they ever realise they will all 'fail' then maybe the push for conversions will ease.
  16. You say you know Mounts, who has property in Spain. and you know he is happy with the 90-day rule. Then you say 100% of those you know with property in Spain think the rule is shit. Which of these statements is true?
  17. A coalition government report in 2013 said over 25,000 members of the forces were involved in the Falklands conflict. 237 died there (nearly 1%) but since then a further 1335 had died (over5%) had died since the conflict, with 95 as suicides (that's over 7% of the deaths). These figures have clearly increased further (presumably at a slower rate) in the last 9 years. Bearing in mind that a majority of the force were under 21 these figures are somewhat sobering.
  18. It's an estimate somewhere between nil and £80bn.
  19. I knew this would happen, but it's worth it. I ignored the lies from both sides on the Referendum. My own calculations indicated that the damage to the economy would be well within the limit before I even began to consider the alternative. Remember the UK population never voted to join the EEC/EU (and never would have). We were only given a say once Europe-obsessed Heath had taken the UK in and the government of his successor was totally split on the issue of staying or leaving.
  20. The problem is that interest rates were slashed to emergency low levels after 2008 issues. Carney, as Osborne's political lapdog, didn't bother to make meaningful upward moves over future years. Now I think there is an understanding that rates need to rise a good way yet to restore balance.
  21. Partly the belief (true or not) that China is easing its draconian Covid measures.
  22. Apparently Gordon had a freak serious leg injury on his first training run at Walsall. he didn't play until 23 Sept but scored last night against Harrogate
  23. Maybe PMQs will be more interesting on 23 November.
