I tell you what he got barely any caps yet bizarrely out of nowhere he started up front at home to Italy in WC98 qualifiers. Did nothing and never played again. If a few more caps would have prevented him from turning into absolute Bacofoil these days though I'd have given him them.

And these were the days when for me going to Villa, Man U, Liverpool, Leeds etc was a huge novelty, Bolton had hardly played there in the previous 15 years. I went all-in and bought tickets for virtually any game it was physically possible to get to. I managed 10 games and never less than 6 of us went. Highlights were 2 games in 1 day (Leeds & Sheff Wed), Gazza's goal v Scotland and watching 2 future BW legends, Djorkaeff and Hierro. But there were some crap games, and England rode their luck hugely v Scotland and Spain.

This debate raises its head periodically and repeatedly on here - and I’m all for it, it shows how iconic Gazza is. I’m unashamedly sat here in my 1990 top, as I usually do when England play. I hope in 30 years my kids are wearing Bellingham shirts, I hope I’m wrong, but I doubt they will. With Gazza you have to look beyond comparative skills of players from different generations. I believe Bellingham is a better prospect and has more to his game than Gazza. I also think Gazza would have run rings round Tom Finney. That doesn’t make Tom Finney any less of an icon and doesn’t dilute his impact on the game. It all comes down to your age. If you were 16-25 in 1990, a football lover, an England fan, who’d knew nothing but World Cup misery, then Gazza is up there as one of your favourite England icons. And he was because at the time he was a world class player, the most skilful Englishman you’d seen grace the green turf, a young skilful, mesmerising player who, in his youth, was taking us to places we never thought was possible as an Englishman. Such a shame he got his injury in 91.

Foden, Bellingham and Saka are probably better players than Gazza but I don't see any of them trying that goal against the Jocks they'd play the safer game. Plus can't see any current players turning up to hostage situations in the future with fried chicken and some tinnies offering to go fishing with the crim.

Gazza was ace as he stood out in a completely shit generation on the back of a club ban in Europe. Hes an icon, a cult figure, tortured genius. But never in a million years the level we have now in Foden and Bellingham. Every player who's played with Foden and every manager says hes the most talented on the ball kid theyve ever seen. You cant have a career on what ifs. You've got to do it to be the best.
