Eddie Posted January 1, 2024 Posted January 1, 2024 As for the game today. Another good win, a classic example of just get the 3 points whichever way you can. Burton were awful, we looked good in the main, how it wasn’t 5 or 6 I’ll never know but we’ve got 3 points and 4 wins in a row over the Christmas period which I can’t imagine many of the other 91 teams will be able to say. Asking the question in a slightly different way - if we are to keep progressing and improving, where would you look to upgrade in the January window, what would you say? For me it would be Williams as well. I don’t think he’s great and other than a couple of games at the start of this season, I think he’s been average at best and often means that we’re over-reliant on the right side (as we were with Bradley last season). I’m pretty happy with the rest of the starting 11, but considering the importance of our wing backs I think we could definitely upgrade on Randy. We could also do a lot worse than Randell. What am I missing in his performances that singles him out as a "lost cause" and "genuinely shocking"? Edited January 1, 2024 by Cheese Quote

I agree Morley had a bad 2nd half, and on another day virtually hands them an equaliser late on, but he was good in 1st half, better than Tomo (or certainly more involved). Lots of good passing and 2 excellent shots (doesn't sound much, but 2 more than anyone else in the entire game possibly). I also think his defensive work is underrated, wins quite a lot of challenges and even headers sometimes. And his corners in the first half were mostly great deliveries that needed defending, unlike those taken by Williams. His 2nd half performance was bizarrely poor and god knows what IE was thinking taking everyone else off apart from the one that was having a mare! Quote

Honestly don't understand how anyone can have such a negative opinion of him. What has he ever done that was "shocking"??? I could name you 3/4 attempted passes from just today's game alone that was shocking. One when he tried to switch it and it ended up in row z. In every game, he constantly gives the ball away, is scared to beat a man and needs an extra 20 pounds on him as he's extremely lightweight and never gets stuck in when he needs to. I am being harsh, but that's because the system we play relies on our full backs so much. Cogley I also feel is underwhelming, however today I thought he was our best player and looked great earlier on in the season, albeit he's ultimately a downgrade from Bradley for sure. I do like the look of Peterborough and their fullbacks, Burrows and Kioso. But I can't help but just feel frustrated every time I watch Williams. Edited January 1, 2024 by Lostock Whites Quote

You could point out 3 or 4 misplaced passes by every single player in our team in every single game we've played this season. If that makes them "lost causes" and "genuinely shocking", I'm baffled as to how we're 2 points off top with a game in hand. Edited January 1, 2024 by Cheese Quote

Ani Posted January 1, 2024 Posted January 1, 2024 Three points all that mattered. Very good second half, could have had 3-4 more. Anyone moaning about anyone today needs to give their head a shake. Quote
Tonge moor green jacket Posted January 1, 2024 Posted January 1, 2024 Thought both wingbacks were good. Didn't have too much defending to do, but they were always pushing forward. Final ball could have been better, but they used the width well. Decent pace too. I was quite pleased with Morley doing that linking job. First half, they all needed to speed the play up a bit, which gradually happened, and then Morley came into it more and had a number of decent cracks at goal. There was one bit where one of their midfielders tried to break, but Morley went with him every inch and nullified any threat. Really pleasing to see that, as it is the area Evatt has wanted improvement from him. More mature and disciplined. Quote

If Cogley plays like the 2nd half today, no complaints at all. But it stood out today because its become the exception rather than the norm - but no criticism today, well played. Williams has played a lot worse than today, but as you say still just gives the ball away routinely even on one of his better days. As you say the full backs are pivotal to how we play, they need to be on form more times than not. As for Kioso, other than being good in the air, I thought he was very average for us and although I've only seen him once this season (against us) he still looked meh. Him and Williams were competing for who gave each other the ball the most, and when one tried to take the other on it all looked a bit non league, a tangle of legs and little co-ordination! Quote

I felt there was far more commitment amongst the players than fans! Not easy to build momentum against stubborn defending neither Quote

auckland_bwfc Posted January 1, 2024 Posted January 1, 2024 Another lovely three points. Never worried about us conceding today. They where another run of the mil league one team . Crap, basically. And I was impressed with the amount of chances we created. We've had many 0-0s in the tunnel at half time when it's been dross. Their keeper did ok but let himself down with the anti football time wasting nonsense. Taking 30 seconds for a pass out at ten mins in 🤣 . A match made in heaven with the mongrel mob that is Burton. Glad we'll never seem them again , cup games aside, and that a few wrongs where righted today. Best performance this year, regardless Quote

Of course we could do worse, we could put me or you at left wing back, that’s a ridiculous comment. You’ve completely ignored my question about improvement - probably on purpose because you just like to create confrontation rather than have a genuine discussion. I’ll leave it there, it’s not one for this thread anyway because as others have pointed out there are only positives to come out of today / the Christmas period. Maybe the question should be on the Transfer Gossip thread - if you could upgrade one position in this window, which would it be. I reckon the majority would agree that it’s LWB. Quote
Spider Posted January 1, 2024 Posted January 1, 2024 In fact Liverpool have, in the last ten minutes, misplaced 6 passes, missed 3 tackles, let a lad score by not playing the offside trap, missed 2 easy chances and not tracked back once. Theyre top if the whole league. And worth about a gazillion pounds. Quote

If we go up , and go up we will, based on our system we need wing backs on both sides of vastly improved quality. It's imperative. We can't go in to ten championship with the current two. 1000% Quote
Spider Posted January 1, 2024 Posted January 1, 2024 Another 3 easy chances missed by the team currently top of the league. They’re a pub team Quote
