Our midfield was awful in too many big games this season.

I personally reckon we can get more effective players in than Evatts favoured 3 for relatively little money.

Let's worry about them being good enough for the championship when we get there.

Time and again our midfield was over run. The blend is simply not right for L1

Correct, it’s crazy that some folk think we could finish in the top 2 with the current players

Don’t mention Maghoma in same breath as Bradley.

I think you get the point i was trying to make… but I’ll be sure to take a breath between mentioning their names in future now that you’ve told me to.

We finished 3rd and only one team lost fewer games. It just isn’t possible that the midfield was over run ‘time and again’ based on those stats… unless you believe that the other areas of our team were so outstanding they could compensate for a poor midfield. Maybe, just maybe, the midfielders are not ‘awful’.

Did you watch us much? Backs to the wall loads of times. Our defence stood up well or Baxter did.

Do you want me to name games where they were over run but we somehow won? Its a long list

Agree with this our midfield is just not good enough disappear when the going gets tough especially Sheehan.

Sheehan is the modern term for headless chicken!

Or the average mans Warren Joyce.,😯

If Sheehan was player of the year, is it simply that Maghoma amd Thommo are not really as good as we think then?

Watched more than enough games.

All about perspectives I guess. With a 3 man midfield there’ll be occasions where it feels like the opposition are in top in that area, as it’s the sacrifice we make using wing backs. At 1-0 up, a midfield doesn’t always need to have the ball at their feet to be impacting the game. The upside is the speed with which we can counter from those ‘backs to the walls’. Our midfield was just fine and, in My opinion, wasn’t the reason we didn’t go up.

That being said, I expect a couple of new faces in there next season alongside Thomason and Sheehan… and would expect Morley likely on his way.

Aye this sideways and backwards stuff along with Evatt not changing the approach is a bit of a myth really.

We went direct loads during the season. Even flurries of going long which was more often than not food and drink for defenders.

Early crosses in the box instead 16 passes and going for the byline cut back helped too.

The key all season was tempo. Once that dropped we'd had it.

A lot of folk are after fundamental formation changes. Not sure that's going to happen :(

It’s simple Evatt has to change his approach and address the basics many have been calling for in the last 2 seasons, if he continues in the same way he really won’t last long

I'd say it's more in game big decisions.

The fundamentals you could argue don't have us far away. We were despite our shortcomings a hares breath away from promotion.

It's those rigid subs and sticking to plan to the bitter end are his downfalls for me.

After the thousands of posts since Wembley and thinking the 50/50 split brings about massive differences in opinion, this post demonstrates we are not far off.

Swapping the word “change” for “tweak” or phrasing it as “more flexible” or “less rigid”, while acknowledging he’s got a lot right which I’d like to see continue, sums up where I am at the minute.

That's the area that really needs addressing for me

He needs to more than tweak his thinking.  More than once he has openly said that he changes certain players depending on the opposition. I then await the team to be announced and it is the same team playing the same way.

Those players are simply too good against 80% of league one and Bolton and Evatt get away with it. We have seen certainly from Christmas onwards teams adapt and find our weakness which is behind our wingbacks.

Substitutions define logic and are too predictable..........In fact Evatt and the way he plays is predictable.

Personally I’d like to see the 3 CBs ditched it’s L1 football let’s just get out of this league I do think he over complicates things.

yes @gonzo the way he uses his substitutions definitely needs to change but for me it’s his in game management like previously said managers have come out and said we did this & that to stop them well counter it we’ve just become so easy to work out, season before it was Bradley & now Sheehan.

personally some of this recruitment has been poor and we do need to strengthen if that means some going to fund this then fine

Most teams have a way of playing. You can't just rip the manual up every time we play someone.

It's about trusting what you do is going to be better than what they do.

Most of the time it works.

He doesn't need to rip the plan to pieces. Just needs to fathom what happens when an Oxford pack the midfield and let us fuck about at the back for 90 mins.

God yeah the recruitment is key.

I'll never understand signing big strapping lumps when we play diagonal balls back across the box all game.

That's major question mark for me. Collins is perfect for our system but I'll never for the life of me understand Dan or even Vic.

Sheehan is the least of our midfield worries IMO.

His fellow pros voted him into the team of the season, he won our player of the year awards, gets called up for his national team etc etc and generally runs our midfield.

The issue is that in certain games, he has been shackled by the opposition but that's (a) the nature of Div 3 football, the 'flair' players don't always have their own way and (b) then down to the manager and Sheehan's team mates to step forward and change it up.

For me its the wingbacks.  Whenever I think about how we might beat the better teams, I find it hard to look beyond the limitations imposed by the importance placed on how well JDC and Williams play.  It feels like we're hamstrung by that formation, in the absence of an outstanding player like Bradley or even Fossey.  We are all talking about who we might sign, but if there's a quality winger or full back available, we are simply not in the market for them.  Morais at his peak wouldn't get in our squad, Dapo had to go, Sadlier etc.  It feels like we are restricted;  "tweaking" the system seems inadequate as we won't have the players in the squad to play a different system, JDC and Williams are 2 guaranteed starters from the squad as it stands and the better opposition will continue to relish the predictability of how to nullify us.

We dont have natural full backs to change the system. Steve Evans would work that out in a instant, but it would be awful to watch.

Agree with that.  Tweaking it is he what he's already doing by for eg bringing on Jerome for Charles but that doesn't improve the delivery/final ball into them.

What are you suggesting then cock?

He changes his whole mantra now and goes 4 at the back with wingers?

Evatt needs to work that one out not me

Tell me how you tweak how we play cock?

Seriously though it's the big question isnt it.

When Santos is stood there like a lighthouse with his foot on the ball facing a packed midfield unwilling to come forward, what does the manager do?

Tell Santos to run forward? Spread the play wide? Change the formation? Get the forwards to move more?

It's our achilies heal and could well be the managers downfall.

Whatever the solution he needs to spend all summer thinking how we are going to break down packed lines, becasue after 3 seasons in, oppositions will be turning out week after week with the same game plan as Oxford.

Any manager worth his salt will be doing this.

Stevenage did it to us towards the end of the season and then Oxford did exactly the same.

Evatt simply has to find a 'plan B' or it's going to be a very long and frustrating season.
