New Playoff Format

EFL confirm Championship playoffs will change format next season

5th v 8th & 6th v 7th play one off match. Team finishing higher will host game. Winners then play 3rd/4th following existing format, 2 legged semi final with 3rd/4th being at home second leg, winners play in final at Wembley.

Not confirmed yet but could come into L1  & L2 the following 27/28 season.

Why do people in charge of decision making keep fucking about with things when they aren't broken? Imagine the scenes when a team in 3rd finishes 1 point off the autos then loses 1-0 at Wembley to the side finishing 8th 25 points behind them.

yet another nail in the coffin

Also be great if the same happens to Ipswich given they hated the play offs as they usually finished third and lost

it's nearly as bad as creating another european competition where you can qualify finishing 7th/8th and trying to call it a major trophy

I am barely able to remain arsed as it is

Awful call. Statistically the lower finishing teams in the national

league have done well as the better placed end up having 2 weeks off.

Love the play offs. This is an Americanised fuck up

It's this. EFL keep 50% of the playoff gates and there's now 2 more games.

Having 3 automatic places used to be the norm...

It's great news...

...for Spurs

rewarding failure and it could mean teams in the normal playoff positions are more relaxed and under little threat and finish the season protecting their main players and using their backups to be fresh and ready for playoffs which could effect the rest of the whole league, losing games near end they wouldn't normally because they are comfortable way sooner in say early April.

why should a team who's so far away from top 2 get a shot at joining them in the Prem? they may do shit in playoffs, but in one off games, who knows? unless whoever made this up wants to see more teams do worse than Derby did?!?

these teams get a chance to play bigger teams with the luck of a cup draw, they shouldn't have a chance by one off games, they've had 46 games to 'normally' achieve that.

probably same people who made semi finals at Wembley not neutral grounds and have the main stadium for the main event.

Play Offs should always involve a team from the Division above, as it used to

Sunderland finished twenty odd points behind Burnley and Leeds yet they are doing much better so I'm not sure the Derby argument holds up

Teams know if you don't finish in the top two then its the play offs and the lottery that comes with it, its nothing new

How many points did we finish above Tranmere in 91 and they went up

it's a good point about Sunderland and also if you look at Oxford who beat us, they were very far behind Derby and Pompey(and us) yet the following season they finished near to them in the Championship, so it's not a given for a team to do terrible, each season with new players is different, I just don't like the idea of giving teams who normally wouldn't finish in the playoffs an opportunity to go up if they haven't been able to after 46 games normally, I know some seasons there could be just a few points separeting say 4th/5th/6th/7th/8th etc so it's not like they'll always be a big gap in ability, but I think increasing playoff spots means there's less reward for finishing higher and giving teams lower an opportunity to take your place in a league above

I'm totally fine with the playoffs as they are, there is zero need for it be extended, unless of course it's all about money or if one of the decision makers who thought of this idea supports a team who constantly finishes just outside the playoffs lol, when the clubs voted for this to happen, who exactly votes yes? is it ultimately the owner?

Couldn’t disagree more. Teams in higher leagues have a much higher playing budget. Totally unfair.

if you finish bottom 3/4, off you go.

Do not agree that 8th should be in with a sniff of promotion.

I do agree that if they are going to introduce that system higher placed teams should have home advantage in one off games. Indeed I think that should be introduced throughout the whole play offs and forget about Wembley. If you are going to have play offs finishing position has to count for something. At the moment it counts for little.

Some right dinosaurs here 😂

Things evolve, rightly or wrongly. It’s like when you go to Tesco (Walkden especially) and they’ve moved the aisles- I hate the cunts, have a strop, but ultimately carry on.

Like the champions league etc they are all businesses and will try to maximise every penny.

You'll just end up with championship midtable fodder in the prem getting twatted every week.

Up until last few games Wolves have been getting twatted every week and they've had a good number of seasons in the prem

You'll always have the likes of Burnley as the perennial yo-yo club so it may not be much different as is especially if a loaded club gets there from 7th or 8th and they spend like Sunderland have

Exactly the same debate that was being had nearly 40 years ago.

Plenty of those disagreeing at the time don’t mind now.

New champions league format, winter World Cup. Of course the motives behind it are money related and dubious, but these changes often aren’t as bad as what some folk anticipate and sometimes turn out to be ok.

Agree totally, players in 10th position with a game to go can end up getting promotion.  Teams in 13th in March win a game and start saying they're having a good season coz they're 5 points off the play offs!  The term "play offs" goes from signifying success to something that's achieved by a third of all teams however bad they are.

On another note - this means our seasons will end even earlier.  I'm no fan of the season carrying on till mid May etc, but for it to finish around mid April is another nail in the coffin of our football season, more Saturdays without a game and more cramming games into midweek.

I went off at a tangent as usual, but I meant to also add that the "one off game" is asking for an undeserved shock to happen.  Everyone says the play offs is a lottery but with 2 legged games its rare for the worse team over the 180 minutes to win.  With a one off game, it just takes a dodgy sending off or penalty in the first half (and you can see us being the victims!) and 46 games go up in smoke because someone like Wycombe or Peterboro are capable of shit housing their way to a 1-0 win against 10 men in one game.  Very unjust.  15 points clear and one foul or pass from Bonham to Sheehan can effectively decide the season.

So keeping playoffs down to 8th & approx 10-12 teams in with a shout right up to the end.

Exciting possibilities for more clubs, for longer.

I get it, I just hate it.
