Talking of strikers taking penalties, remember Kev Davies having a short stint at taking them? He had such a weird technique, he basically floated them into the top corner - very unnatural!

Yeah, I never felt confident when he was taking them. Unnatural was very much the word!

Felt the same any time Beckham stepped up for England. Not the same style, but just never seemed right to me.

I can only think of one

nicely taken

You’ve got to love AI - if you read nothing else, look at the last paragraph in bold 🤣

Kevin Davies had a surprisingly strong penalty record for Bolton Wanderers, especially in the Premier League years.

According to Statbunker’s all-time Premier League data for Bolton:

  • Penalties taken: 6
  • Scored: 4
  • Missed outright: 0
  • Saved: 2

So technically he never missed the target from a Premier League penalty for Bolton — the only failures were saved penalties.

Across all competitions, Bolton fans often remember him as extremely reliable from the spot, despite not taking huge numbers of penalties during his career. His first senior penalty goal actually didn’t come until March 2010 against Wigan.

There’s also a bit of cult nostalgia around his penalties among fans — some supporters on Reddit recently described them as among the best they’d seen for Bolton.

I don’t actually remember him missing many to be fair (sounds like 2), they just looked very strange. Even that one at Birmingham that Zico’s put up, he kicks it as though he’s hitting at 30 yard pass. I’d take 5 of those if it comes to it on Thursday though 😂

That rings a bell from a twitter discussion ranking Bolton penalty takers recently. He wasnt in my top 5 put it that way!

Any penalty that goes in is described as well taken.

Have we had a better penalty taker than Jeff Chandler? I dont recall him ever missing one.

Did McGinley or Philiskirk ever miss one for us ?

Such a weird technique. He doesn't swing through his kick. Just jabs at it and it floats in.

Back to the current team, depends who's on the pitch but if we're going to penalties I'd feel most confident with: Burstow, Sheehan, Rodriguez, Simons and Conway

Holdsworth for me - 13 out of 13 for us

Recall being a little surprised at how composed a penalty taker SKD became as he grew older too. Didn't take that many but don't remember him missing any

Annoyingly, Sarcevic was very very good at them.

A few more recent contenders for ones I was always confident in, ALF and Eoin Doyle come to mind.

Not Sheehan.
I love the guy, but his pens aren't the best.

i can only remember one. Barnsley away and Randall Williams scored the rebound. Was a shite pen, no power in it and nowhere near the corner

Yes, that's all I've got to go off.
It was poor.

Although, his career record is 2 from 4 apparently

Yet Steve Thompson was designated taker when in the team. Blackpool Freight Rover Northern Final second leg.

He scored one in the early rounds of the EFL Trophy

Ironically enough, I think it was against Bradford City

I also seem to remember it was really well hit
