It's a weird one for me. Hate him more now he's gone. Spent a lot of time defending him through blind loyalty and the fact he very nearly got us over the line. The contrast between Oxford an

Fair point.

I reckon I'd have had Lincoln's as the primary option!

I don't

Playoff winners are more remembered than league winners and second in the lower leagues

IMO

My memory isn't my most solid attribute....buuuttt apart from my first season as a fan (96/97) im struggling to recall as many "limbs" moments as this one?

To think we were still only 90 mins away from Burton, Bromley and the other ones ...

Cant wait for next season, even Charlton at home on a Tuesday night is making a little bit of wee come out

That first week when Sasa went and the pre season we had. I was the most depressed man on the planet. Best season ever

To be fair, @L/H White does have a point. Sky are constantly replaying play off finals from the 20th century, including our win against Reading

i guarantee you remember the 1998 play off final between Charlton and Sunderland, which ended 4-4 before Charlton won 7-6 on penalties. I’m fairly certain you couldn’t tell me who won the first division title that year, without looking it up.

In fact, even where we were involved, could you say who won the first division in 1995, without checking?

Even if you could name these two winners, how many of us could? To be honest, although I knew 1995 because we were involved, I had to look up 1998.

Remembered by our fans maybe.

Look at the comments, particularly afterwards, how folk have little confidence in so many of our players, and reckon we need a good number of replacements.

I doubt that would be the case if we had swept away all before us.

Apart from one or two particularly eventful playoff games, I reckon fans generally can't tell you who won the play offs from a few of seasons back. No more so than remembering the title winners that season.

Good counter argument as I can't remember either of the league winners those years. But then I wouldn't have been able to tell you what year that Charlton v Sunderland final was (or which division tbh before you said). And I couldn't tell you who won the play offs the year before when we won the championship title.

I agree that play offs is more memorable than going up second, but getting that title is surely the best way to go up as a fanbase and the memorable-ness for neutrals probably just depends on the style: dominant league win will be remembered more than a damp squib play off match some seasons.

going up 2nd v Preston was great

going up at Wembley v Reading was great

going up as Champions in 96/97 was great

going up at Cardiff v Preston was great

going up 2nd v Peterborough was alright

going up 3rd v Crawley was a massive releif

going up at Wembley v Stockport was great

Peterborough only alright!

Great occasion that.

Fine performance on the day, thoroughly enjoyable and a big fuck off celebration afterwards.

it would've been better the week before at Port Vale with the pitch invasion and all that

it was expected v Peterborough, to not would have been a travesty

Absolutely it would.

Still a great day, and any nerves over the potential failure were quickly eradicated.

Thinking about it, the Crawley game was similar.

Away, but needed the result.

Solid, comfortable win.

The Sky Football channel now has both our games v Bradford as 30 minute jobbies as well as the final as a 60 minute. It is just under EFL in the listings but you can watch any time.

Its an interesting debate.  I can remember some play off final goals for no apparent reason, they are just in my head.  That Leicester-Swindon one when Swindon were 3-0 up (Hoddle got 1) and Steve Thompson scored a cracker to bring it back to 3-3 (assisted by Mike Whitlow!) - Paul Bodin pen won it for Swindon.

And that Windass volleyed winner for Hull v Bristol City, with his bleached hair.  18 years later a similar personality and also bound to be a legend forever, McBurnie scores the only goal at the same end.

Huddersfield beating Sheff Utd on pens, I think when Kachunga was there.

They don't all stick in the mind but quite a few do, a lot more than whoever finished 2nd for me.
