Climate change etc may be having a compounding effect, but we all know why we are in the situation we are in.

I'm not sure the UK really knows what it's place in the world is anymore. I think colonialism is still a major factor in the way the country sees itself and it's responsibilities. Not necessarily that we want a return to it.Brexit I'd argue has more of an immediate impact. Both in terms of the jump in numbers of immigrants and asylum speakers since we pulled out - but more in that where we acted as the arbiter between the states and the EU, we're now having to 'pick sides' and we're not clear on which way to go now those relationships are more polarised. We need some sort of New Deal type of leader. Who is going to articulate the next 50 years and get some broad agreement (if not total agreement) from the racist thickos and the bean munching lefties. Otherwise we really do have two camps and there is an increasing danger of civil unrest.
