Away Grounds

Featured Replies

Having gone to to a new gound for me last week - Walsall - got me wondering about how many I'd been to, and so a quick list says that as best I can judge I've seen Bolton play a first team game at 58 different grounds - including Europe and Wembley, Cardiff etc. Poor show, I know for what will, come next Feb, be 30 years watching them - but what can you do :-k

Interested to know other people's totals and what would be your 3 "claims to faim".

On the latter front mine I supposed would be:

Besiktas - 352 tickets sold with 250 of them for the day trip. A few dozen Whites in Istanbul , mesen included, the night before.

Yeovil - we've been there once, in the LC, and, perfectly understandably, we were not exactly sold out!

Wimbledon, at Plough Lane - only one chance at this - in the snow in early 1984. We were there once and never again....and I remember someone setting fire to the away stand!

Leyton Orient - Boxing Day noon kick off watching 3rd division rubbish

Pisa - When any trip into Europe was only something that the hardcore and notrights did

Ipswich and Norwich - on consecutive saturdays

There are a host of league cup games in the late 80's and early 90's that I cannot even remember, they were that nondescript.

Plovdiv

Southend one midweek - we won, and that for me was a London win

the first for about 3000 years, and celebrated with a fire in the main stand (madness looking back)

Mayola Pk and Linfield, Northern Ireland 84

Plovdiv - all but 12 months to the day

63 of the current League grounds, plus 19 former grounds, Europe & Friendlies.

Claims to fame ?

Darlington away in 90ish, 3-0 down when I got in the ground, lost 3-2 IIRC

Travelling on the overnight Seacat for a daytrip to Dublin to watch a friendly against St Pats.

Driving down to West Ham for the Saturday afternoon game, back to Bolton, then straight back to Brighton & back. (Only way I could get the day off was to Ensure my gaffer covered me on the Saturday, but he was flying from Gatwick 1st thing Sunday morning)

I've seen Bolton play a first team game at 58 different grounds

Lightweight. And to be honest Satan that figure of 58 surprises me.

I???m pushing 90 grounds, might even be more. Hoping to add Newcastle United to that list in a couple of weeks.

The first time I went to Oxford I couldn't find it (the ground that is). Didn't have a map or owt (days before t'internet) and relied on the signs from the A34. Well that was a stupid idea.

At some points during my travels around, I could hear the crowd but didn't manage to find the place. In the end (around final whistle time) I parked up by an off-licence, got a bottle of wine and then went home. Luckily it was in the days when you bought tickets on the door.

well there might be a few I've been to that I don't remember :-k

Anyhow, how the feck have you not been to Newcastle thus far?

You should start a new thread - "how many grounds have you been chucked out of ? "

Claims to fame

Workington for a midweek pre-season friendly in the back of a Chembourse yogurt van with a bunch of notrights.

C Palace away sometime in the mid 80???s. It was called off just as we were going under the Kearsley roundabout - but we still went, why? Seem to remember that Africa by Toto was riding high in the charts at the time.

Hereford away 76/7

went down on a ribble coach, game postponed due to frozen pitch

went to rearranged game on supporter's club coach, game postponed due to fog

game rearranged again for the very next night 15/12/76, club put on a free coach for us and Willie Morgan came in Hereford suporter's club before the game and gave us a load of free match tickets off the players.

Sheff Utd 78....1st Ever away game aged 7yrs...we won 5-1 away...yes away.

Cambridge... 1 Tues night...Me Crampo and AN Other in the back of an estate car, being young lads taking the piss out of the older lads all the way home...they vowed never to travel with us again...think we got back about 2am.......The best thing about that day, one lad getting a 180 with Plastic darts in a Cambridge Pub.

Guimares.......After watching so long through good and mostly bad...my 1st ever Proper (not counting that Anglo Italian Shite) European away game.......What a sight.....and to see so many old face's...brought a tear to my eye.

Been to well over 90 differant grounds watching the Whites.

Chelsea, Colchester & Hartlepool to do, then you've got all the new Stadiums & the new comers to the League.

Not too bad though, for a Manc!

toodle pip

Besiktas...No1!!! (one to tell the grandkids when I get them)

Grimsby.....midweek when the petrol strike was on.

Norwich...just for the sheer good day out it was.

29 away grounds is my total. 31 including Wembley and Cardiff.

Many a happy day watching the Super Whites, here's to many more! :yahoo:

not been to as many away grounds as i'd like but 3 that stick out for me

Burnley in 93 me very first away game at the age of 10, we went with me dads mate who was a burnley fan so we were in with all them. Super John scores i jump up and down like a man possesed then wonder why no one else is cheering :-k

Villa in 2002 me first away game without me dad. Got absolutly smashed with the lads from uni before hand and i can remember feck all about it!

Dingles in 2004 just a fantastic match and day out!

St Mirren in the Anglo-Scottish Cup, some time in the seventies (we lost, I think, and the Jocks were moaning like mad becasue they thought Paul Jones was dirty.)

Bournemouth in the very early seventies - I think I was about the only Bolton fan there, and we were supposed to get a doing because Bournemouth were riding high in the second division at the time - but we won!! Alan Waldron was awesome.

I think you can tell the age of respondants to this thread by the number of grounds no longer hosting league football that we have been too!

44 - Grounds currently hosting league football

10 - Grounds sadly no longer with us

9 - Grounds of teams now in non-league football

3 - European grounds

2 - cup final grounds

68 is my total

Best 3 claims to fame:

Exeter - Tuesday night in the depths of our one season visit to the basement

Burnley - staying on the paddock long after the final wistle and collecting more cash off the floor than I had paid to watch the game!

Witton - a cup tie from the dark days when the BBC camera's came to see a shock. I was on every single crowd shot that Match of the Day showed of the Bolton fans!!

I could have mentioned the great cup wins at Liverpool, Everton and Arsenal but we took 1000's to these games, best to pick the obscure games!

Having flicked through the current league tables I've not seen Bolton at 14 of those grounds: Cardiff, Plymouth, Col U, Yeovil, Brighton, Gillingham, Cheltenham, Scunthorpe, Wycombe, MK Dons (but I have Wimbledon), Accy Stanley, Hereford, Barnet and Boston.

However Coventry, Southampton, Leicester, Swansea, Darlington and Hull were all at their old grounds...

So I guess that makes 75. Plus Wembley, Cardiff, the Euro aways in Bulgaria, Portugal and France and also places like RMI for friendlies and Witton Albion in FA Cup.

Some places I've been to both old and new grounds - of those I can think of Man City, Stoke, Derby, Huddersfield (and saw us in the cup at Leeds Road v Emley), Middlesbrough and Wigan.

There's a few perculiar ones too: at Chester I saw us at the old ground and at Macc, but don't think I've seen us at the Deva, though I could be wrong...Fulham; seen us at the Cottage and at Loftus Road....

This year I'll add Reading and Arsenal's new grounds and hopefully one of the missing grounds above in the cup.

My memory is going and I'm only 28...I dunno how you old'uns who've been everywhere manage to remember it all..

I didnt realise until someone at work mentioned it that Doncaster have a new one opening end of the year.

looks a bit soul-less even by modern ground standards!

Just added mine up it's 41 grounds including the 3 Euro aways, Wembley and Cardiff, not bad for a 22 year old. Chelsea, Reading and Watford are the one's i've not been to in this seasons premiership and hoping to do all 3 this season

Some memorable one's

Boltons first ever premiership game at Wimbledon losing 3-2, we must have took 5/6,000 easy on a boiling hot day in London

Coming back from 3-1 down at half time to win 4-3 at Blackburn a couple of seasons ago as mentioned above

The 3 Euro games, all class for different reasons

The Preston win in the play off final at Cardiff

The two wins at OT, never thought i'd see that day

Managed about 40-50 grounds.

Memorable ones have been

Man Utd - that midweek game, with Nolan taking the ball off Beckham before firing it underneath Barthez. Went out with the lads all day in Manc, fell asleep outside Yates on Piccaddilly & only woke up 10 mins before kick off when Windsor White (in his pre-piggy days) rang me up asking me where I was. Ended up about 6 rows down after Nolan scored - it was f??cking mental that nght.

Ipswich - Barry Knight cost us the game, but our performance & the atmosphere inside the ground made it a special night. Went on the travel club coach with Fengshui, some cheeky f??ckers decided they were going to cause damage to the inside of the ground at the final whistle.......

Liverpool at Wembley - I was up all night chasing spacemen the previous night (LSD was all the rage), fell asleep when we left Bolton & woke up to see the Wembley Towers - it was weird. Cracking day out, especially when the scousers sh??t out and left the Torch when a number of Bolton fans started getting rowdy. And we had anothe day out there a few months later - happy days.

Sheff Wed - it was my 21st and we started boozing in Bolton to Manc to Sheffield. We won 3-0, with Ian Marshall scoring the third - superb away following there, as well. The chant was 'feed the donkey and he'll score' all the way home, things got a bit hazy later on but I remember being shocked at the amount of munichs there were going back to Preston & the like from Old Trafford - glory hunting w??nkers.

been to 77 of the current 92 league clubs also 5 clubs who are now in the conference, most of the ones i am missing we have not played, 3 games that stood out that only anoraks would go to are the following.

1979-80 season last away game of a woeful season was ipswich away nowt to play for already relegated as a 15 year old went with a car load of lads i grew up with and stayed the weekend.

southend away boxing day 12-00 oclock kick off, went round to pick up one of the lads about 5 in the morning he came running out of the house in a full father christmas outfit and wore it all day.

watford away in the john mcgovern era about 83-84 in the league cup we had already lost the home leg of a 2 legged tie against a really decent watford team and had no chance of getting a result with the shiitte we had in our team, unfortunately Mcgovern scored making it 2-2 on aggregate forcing us to play extra time and i think penalties and then loosing , resulting in getting home about 3 in the morning. i counted 13 bolton fans on the terrace behind the goals, one of them was Ivan with a few of his mates.

when i look at fixtures like these i have travelled to, i worry about myself. :::::::::lol:::::::::

21 years ago this week we played forest in the league cup

think it was 4-0 at the city ground

thought we could turn it round in the second leg if we go an early goal

Just added mine up, reckon about 42 but may have missed a few.

Ipswich Away when we won on away goals only to be marred by the death of that Dad and his kid driving home, poor feckers.

Besiktas Away - just an all round experience really and me flag got me more free beer than can be mentioned.

Liverpool Away when Super and Walker got us the goals. Got chased across Stanley park by some knobs.

Man U away (like AS pointed out) when Nolan got the winner. I was in the directors box as a guest of the commercial director so made it even better!!! :yahoo:

Reading at Wembley when I thought we had blown it. I cried when the final whistle had gone. :-k

72 in all so far. Mainly missing the Prem grounds, funnily enough. May do City Of Manc with you lot at Xmas to cross another off.

Hartlepool away on a monday night. We lost 1-0 in driving rain to enhance the "why? factor".

Chester away in the LDV "Southern" section.

Sorry to trump you all but by my calculations the only grounds I???ve not visited are Cheltenham, MK Dons & Barnet. Admittedly a handful I???ve visited while watching Chorley (Boston, Accy Stanley).
