Anyone Else Changed Their Minds?

On Megson?

Must admit i wasn't keen on the guy when he first came, but his job was to improve on last seasons shite start - and he did it. He seems to go about his business quietly, without spouting about who his possible targets are. He doesn't "court" the media for self promotion - in front of the cameras he comes accross as intelligent, articulate and honest, and he's made one or two great signings.

He'll always have the Lisbon debacle hanging over his head, but we don't even know for sure that the descision to take the reserve team was actually his - there is a possibility that it was a descision made above his head.

I think if the Bolton public try and get behind the bloke instead of hoping he fails, he might just surprise one or two next season - here's hoping. <_<

For me the jury is still out

I'm not convinced

However

This is HIS season - he has funds to bring in his own players and a full pre-season to mould them into his team without worrying about fire-fighting.

when the 08/09 season ends we can then decide. I dont rate him but lets hope Im proved wrong!

hmmmm...no.

We stayed up, but by the skin of our teeth. Lisbon was not followed by some rejuvenated, refreshed play - it was following by the awfullness of Villa Park and the tectical capitulation against Arsenal.

Though as JD says above, this is his chance now.

Megson has doen nothing that has surprised me so far.

We knew anelka would go and he did.

We knew the league would be a priority and it was.

We knew he would sign solid players and he has. Spent reasonable amounts of money along the way.

We suspected he would struggle to sign 'flair' players and/or attackers and he has.

So far he has kept a squad of players who were good enough to stay up in the division.

The test comes in coming months he is building from the back.....jussi/stiensson/cahill/obrien/gardener with moumba in front feels ok, throw in Nolan Taylor and kev d. you have the basis of a team, with other players making up a not bad squad.

we still need a pacey forward and a playmaker hope he realises that although signing ehd would not be a bad thing there are plenty more out there he could also look at.

it might be a pipe dream but eidur could do the job as a playmaker/forward, then we just need some pace.

jury still out for me.

To be fair to Megson, when he took over, his job was to keep us up. Which he did. He also brought in quality players with the exception of not bringing a striker in of course. Not heard much of Muamba but from what the brum fans are saying, he's sounds pretty decent. Megson is slowly but surely building a squad that has decent technique and strong work-rate. This IS, in theory, his first season with the majority of HIS squad but it will take a good few seasons before he gets us to play the way he wants us to play and to FULLY assemble his own squad.

Next season will give us a good indication on whether he can take us to similar/bigger heights than what BSA brought us.

He came to keep us in the Premier League and succeeded. As has been said, this season is his first in charge so let's give him a chance. I don't think he could do worse than the previous incumbent . . . but then again I think I could have done a better job than LSL!

If we're up shit creek without a paddle early on in the season I just hope the board don't keep waiting to see if we can turn the corner.

To give him a little credit, as someone else has said I do think he is an honest guy who tells the truth, which does bring some respect.

Also he does seem to be building a squad of young players on longish contracts, which is at odds with what SA tried to do. Every close season major changes were needed by SA as he had built his team on shifting sand by using loans and old players.

Hopefully GM is building a younger team that can improve and develop over the next 2-3 years. Therefore a mid-table finish and a decent cup run would do me for next year.

Only time will tell which manager had the right idea.

I dont think he'll ever be popular with the Bolton faithful, but after last season to still be less popular than Sammy Lee is remarkable.

Megson got us playing that shitty winning football again and neglected the cups in order for us to stay up.

If we avoid a relegation dogfight this season and maybe have a go at one of the cups instead of giving up before they start i will have changed my opinion totally. Im slowly coming round to the idea of him being manager for a good few years but still need a little more convincing.

Not convinced. I'd be quite happy if he suddenly fecked off right now. However, thats not going to happen. So I will wait and see on signings, style of play and start to the season.

I will never forgive him for Lisbon. Simple as.

Therefore a mid-table finish and a decent cup run would do me for next year.

Fook me i'd be ecstatic with that

I agree with the views above that he has done ok given what he apparently inherited, and this season is the test for him, when he has the chance to shape it from start to finish.

I don't blame him for Lisbon, IMO he was following orders from above, and anyway the decision was vindicated by the fact that we needed very point and every goal to stay up (for the pedantic, I don't believe we would have drawn at Chelsea had we needed to, and a couple of goals worse off and we woujld have been a couple goals from going dowm midway through the second half). Given we didn't appear particularly fit after Lisbon, then it is likely two more european games would have been too much for us to cope with. And also, the players who played in Lisbon should have done much better.

Though I thought he made some good decisions in the run in, we were very lucky at Boro and Spurs and could have been thrashed in either game. Given we finished with 37 points he effectively took us down, it was only the failings of others that kept us up. If we had gone down then he would or should have been sacked, and this would have been down to his apparent inability to recognise that you need players who can score goals in order to win games in the second half of last season.

The players seem to like him, the fact that Jussi and Gardner are signing new contracts is a good sign, Nolan and Davies say good things about him, he signs his players efficiently and quickly (unlike BSA), and wins the transfer battle against other clubs (Cahill and Taylor)

Last season we were IMO noticeably physically weaker (from what I hear down to LSL's pre season and neglect of the fitness side of the game) and I would like to see Megson build the backroom side of the club up in his own way, and I want to see the players looking fit and strong again at the end of games this season.

If we have a good pre season then we have a good chance of getting to mid table, because he has had the opportunity to buy decent players in defence and midfield and appears to have done so. Having said that, he must buy quality attackers (or re-invent Braaten and invent Vaz Te) or we will struggle.

if we dont get a least 7pts from our first three games , then id sack the c*nt

5 points from 10 games when he came in. To stay up with a game to spare was a superb effort.

This is his season. A decent spine of the team exists already and he has more cash to spend then BSA could ever dream of. The fixtures are kind, with a good chance to get early points on the board.

Megson it is over to you.

we were bottom of the table when he took over.

Never let it be said wanderers fans are fickle

Being prepared to change your opinion is not a bad thing.I suppose it depends on how often you change it.
About every 10 minutes seems to be typical.

I don't know how anyone in their right mind can, at the time, have considered the appointment a good thing.

So my opinion of the guy has improved. His signings have been very good on the whole. If he can just coax a decent striker and a bit of midfield creativity to sign we could be looking at getting near the top 10.

Every man back for corners and reluctance to make substitutions p!sses me off. Hope that changes next season as it shows a serious lack of tactical awareness.

He had the tactical awareness to realise the players performed best in the system that had been in place for the previous 6 years.

That is more than can be said for a former England coach who is now the #2 at Liverpool.

Don't get me wrong, I am not a great Megson fan but he achieved all that was asked of him last season. Lets see what he can do this time around.

I will never ever change my mind about this man.

He crossed the line in Lisbon.

His teams play a certain way which is mind numbing to watch. He's tactically inept, unable to motivate and out of his depth at this level.

I'll find better things to do with him in charge.

Who you want then as our manager?

Oh and i dont give a shit how we play as long as we win,

The quality of football is no worse than BSA's last 18 months.

And I'll let you all into a little secret. Some of you may find it hard to grasp.

There isnt a BWFC chequebook with 'Gary Megson Esq' printed in the bottom right hand corner.

He did what he was asked to do. No more no less.

I bet he wishes there was, though.
