Former Bolton Wanderers manager Ian Greaves has died at his Ainsworth home, aged 76.

 

Initially assistant to Jimmy Armfield at Burnden Park, Greaves took on the post in October, 1974.

 

He transformed the club's fortunes, taking them to the League Cup semi-finals in 1977 and a year later, the Second Division championship.

 

He left Burnden Park in January, 1980, 76 with Wanderers bottom of the First Division but helped mould the careers of Sam Allardyce, Peter Reid and many others during his time at the club.

My first game was in the Ian Greaves era, what a great team we had in the promotion-winning season.

 

What an achievement to create that team with our own produced talent, Reid, Allardyce, Paul Jones, Siddall and the rest. He was a true father figure to them.

 

My father in law knew him personally and told me he was great company with that enviable capacity not to take himself too seriously.

 

A real man.

I was hoping before i clicked on the link it would not be news of his death.

i belive his first game was a home one v orient

 

we won 2-0 if memory serves

 

armfield built that team and greaves added to it

 

he was hounded out of the club in the end

Ian Greaves has got a lot to answer for. I have spent a fortune, and seen relationships crumble because of the addiction he started.

I wrote that originally in my post above. Totally agree

He was a great manager. I started watching the Whites properly in 1973 and from their on the sides got better and better. Greavies teams played with flowing football and was fantastic to watch. I'd stick my neck out and say that Reidy possibly played his best football then too. He brought some very good players to the club with Frankie Worthy the best of the bunch.

 

Here's to a great BWFC legend.

Everytime I heard Big Sams super white army I always sung Ian Greaves in my head. It was how we were brought up singing it at every match.

RIP have great memories from that era

I remember him saying that when he got the sack he was driving away from Burnden and a funeral cortege passed him going the other way. He saw it and thought to himself - somebody as had a worse day than me!

 

I don't think it was a true story but merely showing that being sacked was not the worst thing in the world and that he would bounce back!

 

I thought Armfield would be an impossible act to follow - but Greaves did it fantastically well.

 

He had been successful at Huddersfield before his time with us and brought Frank Worthington into the game there.

 

Sad news indeed.

I first started watching the Super Whites during Ian's reign.

Anyone remember Jim McDonnagh (I think) singing re-worded version of Matchstalk Men? It was on the Town Hall steps at the 'let's show off the second division championship trophy' time.
