Eddie Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 Loads of talk at the moment about where he's going to go and who will have him. Got me thinking, worth a punt? I'm not sure... I'm aware of all the negatives, his fitness, his desire, whether he's good enough anymore. And I know that at Newcastle he's on ridiculous wages. But I can't help thinking that at 29 he still has many years ahead of him, and that form is temporary but class is permanent, and he certainly is class. IF, and it's a massive if, he could somehow prove his fitness, and he took a massive pay cut and was put on a pay as you play basis then I personally would take the gamble (easy for me to say). I know it's all ifs and buts, and he probably wouldn't want to come to us anyway. But as I am extremely bored with the lack of football, I thought I'd see what other peoples opinions on the once great (and still relatively young) player are.
Garrp Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 hes gone at the game and is only carrying on to fund his horse racing empire

There will be far more Premiership clubs he will choose before us. The injuries have caused him to lose that 10 yard burst of speed that got him away from defenders and he will never get it back. Also he won't take a massive pay cut or do a pay as you play deal as someone will sugn him on ?50k a week and take a chance on him. Gartside and Megson are too smart to take a risk on him but it will be interesting to see who does. My money is on him going to Everton.
no balls Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 I know it's all ifs and buts, and he probably wouldn't want to come to us anyway. Oh, I don't know. Beggars can't be choosers! Either way, I think he's been robbing a living for a while on the back of a what I see as a woulda shoulda coulda career. So for that reason iamout!

Eddie Posted June 21, 2009 Author Posted June 21, 2009 Oh, I don't know. Beggars can't be choosers! Either way, I think he's been robbing a living for a while on the back of a what I see as a woulda shoulda coulda career. So for that reason iamout! That was the only reason that I could really seeing him coming here NB. The "portfolio" that has been sent out to clubs is an embaressment and shows that the lad is desperate. Personally I think that he still has the short bursts of pace, but has lost the ability to keep it up, I also think that he has such a sharp brain that he can gain an extra yard on defenders. I don't think anybody would doubt his finishing when infront of goal, but he would definitely need somebody creative behind him which at present we are sorely missing. Like I have already said I have many doubts over fitness, desire, wages etc. But if the summer starts to come to an end, and he is still stuck at a Championship team then maybe he might just consider any possible way out. It would be a massive risk, but if the risk could be reduced with clauses in a contract, then I would personally be for it.
Casino Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 you're looking at a 10 million commitment if it comes off, he goes next summer if it doesn't, it burns a big hole in your pocket ermm, too risky, no thanks
Guest bwfcdan Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 form is temporary but class is permanent. Michael Ricketts hasnt got a club at the moment.... worth a punt
HomerJay Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 according to wiki: 07/08 - 31 games 13 goals 08/09 - 31 games 10 goals at the right money, i'll have no probs with owen in a white shirt. only 29 and still a top, top quality footballer.
ROSSENDALEWHITE Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 The papers are saying Hull are after him ?40000 a week and ?10000 a goal.
MickyD Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 And we all know the papers only ever print factual stuff!

Tombwfc Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 I'm also interested to know how he's 'wank'..... Since leaving for Spain.... 04/05: 18 Starts, 13 Goals 05/06: 10 Starts, 7 Goals 06/07: 3 Starts, 0 Goals 07/08: 24 Starts, 11 Goals 08/09: 21 Starts, 8 Goals Overall: 76 Starts, 39 Goals. If he's wank we're fooked.

Not that bad to be honest. Near enought goal every other game.
BWFC_LOVE Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 He actually got 16 in 35 appearences in spain. Not that bad to be honest. Near enought goal every other game. And the majority of those were from on the bench. He just didn't get enough starts for Madrid, and Newcastle were willing to pay double the amount they paid for him the season before. If he were willing to go to Hull for a reported ?40,000 a week plus bonuses, I'd take a gamble myself. Offer him a one-year deal, ?50,000 a week, give him half a million to sign for us, agent fees etc. That's just over ?3m to sign a 29-year old England player with a consistent scoring record throughout his career. Well worth the risk.

Why is he a shitbag? The lad is never in trouble and is a decent pro in my opinion.
The True Marple White Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Said this morning on SSN that a club, I think it was Hull, were getting ready to offer him a basic salaried contract with appearance and goal bonus, which I think is a cracking idea. Slightly lower wage with a bumber bono! I recon we could surely match that!
Drew Peacock Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 I think a basic, plus pay as you play would be a cracking deal for us. Plus, I think he would be trying hard to get back in the England squad for next year - I say go for it.
YATESY Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 If Owen goes to Hull at least the Mr Crippled-knee will have someone to hold his hand in the can't-be-arsed / always-injured room.
Ani Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 I'm also interested to know how he's 'wank'..... If he's wank we're fooked. 26 goals in 4 years. 6.50 a season.
tylswhite Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 With the right contract he is definatley worth the risk. When the guy plays he scores goals, its just a matter of how much he would play that would decide if its a success. If we can manage to get him playing say 25 games a season, he would get 10 goals minimum imo.
passmosster Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 26 goals in 4 years. 6.50 a season. My concern would be an avearge of 15 starts a season for the last five. He hasn't played more than 25 games in a season. At Hull, he would be a matching set with Jimmy Bullard.
