It's obvious it's gonna kick off, which is the reason why a lot of people are going i expect. Pointless really, a lot of innocent people are gonna get hurt.. Where exactly are they marching in town anyway? Im glad im going to everton to be honest...

Zzzzzz!Your putting everyone to sleep again Frank with your bullsh*t!

OK then Tony which bit of my post is bullshit?

If anything should be banned then its the UAF and the 50 coachloads of Hippies coming to town, They should have there own march on a different day.

why should they?

If the EDL have a right to stage a protest so do the smelly hippies, watch out for the ones in EDL t-shirts beating up the islamic types though

ideally i'd rather neither group was allowed to 'protest' in bolton but as they have every right to you can't stop one groups protest whilst allowing the others.

The problem is you can not stop the UAF from doing a counter protest because of a loophole in the law. The EDL have given notice about their forthcoming procession to the police, but due to the poor legislation that is The Public Order Act you do not have to inform the authorities if you want to hold an on the spot demonstration, which the UAF will argue is their purpose of being in Bolton on the same day as the EDL. All in all it will be another Manchester/Stoke where the EDL and UAF have a stand off in the town centre, with numerous people getting arrested for breach of the peace. Which in turn will gain column inches in the tabloids and the EDL will achieve there aims by increasing their number of supporters.

I think the town is due a good ruck, some mayhem and major upheaval!

Might bring the kids. What time does it start? Do they do EDL t-shirts in kids sizes?

And will the Nile be open? Quite fancy some proper grub.

the police/council are trying to get the counter demonstration somewhere well away from the EDL demo, doubt it'll work though

i'd happily let em stage their counter demo and then tear gas both sides

however, you aint telling me there isn't legislation about to prevent the uaf turning up

something along the lines of 'reasonable suspicion it'll fcuking kick off'

the sort of stuff used to control football supporters

But you know that "the stuff used to control football supporters' does not apply to any one else

Thats what the council are using to get it banned, it won't work even if Johnson bans it they'll all still turn up and the TC will be even more likely to get smashed up.

What if the centre gets smashed up? 27 pound shops suffer a couple of quids worth of damage? If they stock up on goggles and balaclavas, they'll be reet.

You can't blame the racists for the fact no one with any sense or money shops in Bolton any longer thus the businesses there are teetering on the brink.

No you can't but (going really off track for the thread) when you look at the bigger picture you can't really blame the council.

With manchester and the trafford centre so close and easier to get to and with all the shops people want big or small.

short of forcing people to do business from bolton theres not a lot the council can do.

the same problems face bury, rochdale, stockport etc all that will happen with regeneration is that shopss already in the town will move to new premesis leaving empty units elsewhere in the town to be filled by the likes of primark/home bargains/poundland. (look at the 'new' shopping centre in wiggin)

Any none scutters prefer shopping in manc or the Trafford Centre already so why would they come to back to the provincial towns when they'll never have the all shops they want?

I can and I will... It's probably before your time but once upon a time Bolton was vibrant.

They must have had advanced warning the Trafford Centre was being built. And that it would offer free parking. It may now be too late to address this but they've had the last 12+ years and done fuck all about it. Let us not forget that, complacency has led Bolton into the state it is in now. And that's just one of the reasons the EDL is targeting Bolton, because people are angry about the state of the place that was once theirs.

It's the same everywhere not just bolton though, if there was an easy fix surely every town would've done it and be thriving.

The increase in car use, the internet, the rise of the designer brands etc there's plenty of things that have lead to the downfall of the local town centre.

With manchester only 20 mins away both the shoppers and the shops themselves will not come to bolton regardless of what the council do free parking won't bring people into town if all they've got to come to town for is a debenhams and a BHS pretty much all the shops every town boltons size has.

All the niche shops (Comic, skate type shops in the northern quarter) and 'trendy' shops (Designer shops, Selfridges, harvy nicols etc) want to be in manchester and they're why people choose manchester over the likes of bolton/bury etc.

How come Cheshire Oaks and the place in Fleetwood aint in Manchester? Perhaps its all down to bad town centre management

Cheshire oaks is belting, Freeport was half shut when i last went a couple of years ago.

You possibly could have a cheshire oaks discount outlet type place in a town centre and it'd be really busy but without government investment it wouldn't happen as the cost of the land needed or buying a large enough existing building would be far too much for a place essentially selling unsold last season stock and seconds.

That said an idea i've always thought plausable was turning Farnworth/Westhoughton/Horridge town centre into an outlet village.

So what exactly can't you buy in Bolton, that every other town in England has ?

As a certified geek a decent Comic shop and a clothes shop i want to buy somthing from would probably keep my shopping in Bolton, until then Manc is my only option.

And if we cant buy it why not, we are one of the biggest towns in europe surrounded by a fantastic motorway network, much better than the Trafford Centre. I dont understand

Niche stores have more chance of making enough money to survivein the big cities, shops like Selfridges/Harvey Nichols rely on their exclusivity to make money so won't set up outside the large cities.

These are the shops that separate Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and Leeds from every other high street in England without them every high street in the country is a clone of the next.

Not being a shopper I'm not well up, however the only time I venture into Bolton is to go to the bank and pay in my expenses from work.

It is a hovel, full of 'tat' shops.

Will there be Morris Dancing and other traditional English fare? Good stuff, I like a bit of Larkrise to Candleford.

Due to march my pub the Morris Dancers wont be opened till 1,30blink.gif

My Poppadoms and Petrol Bombs stall is now ready.

I intend to spot myself to the left of the town hall as rumour has it the Hot Diggidy Dog stallowner has bottled it and won't be showing up. From what I can gather an opposing faction of unwashed, long-haired, Gaurdian-reading types are coming armed to the teeth with folded arms, tuts and New Labour cash so I have added falafel and vegetable dishes to my menu.
