Whenever I see posts about Nicky Hunt, I'm pretty reluctant to participate in a discussion because I find it a little taboo to talk negatively about a local lad.

 

I'll break my silence and say I thought he was mainly very poor; he had the ability here and there to put in a decent cross, to be fair he did have a lot of injuries and got his fair share of stick, moral can upshot a players performance and it's not like he was inept, if he delivered regularly the kind of balls he played for Dioufy that UEFA Reebok night, then it would have been a decent fall back to kind of balance out the errors or misfortune that happened quite often like his own goal against West Ham in the replay at Upton Park for example.

 

He's kind of in the Crouch area, in the sense that he plays/looks a tad awkward with his technique/stance etc, his presence didn't give out much confidence. Not comparing ability with Crouch, because for a gangly tall man, he's got decent control and skill, Hunt had little of this;

 

Close to Steinsson? I wouldn't say a million miles of, Steinsson is in my opinion; 60% bad, 40% good, his lack of discipline, his constant loss of a man, the many times a player gets in behind is worrying and Steinsson for me shows very little authority/consistent awareness; he does however have a greater ability trait when going forward, so even with a vague-no doubt forgetting more sufficient performances from Hunt memory I'd still give Steinsson the vote.

Gretar is in one of those positions where I believe can be bettered and should be looked at, at the least try and get a better understanding with players like Lee, the passing bit is fine, but the defensive side/the positional aspect is quite mediocre at best, if you overlap, you need players to fill in, if you?re going to let a player have space, don?t allow enough freedom so even only a let's say 70% accurate pass can still lead to the opposition getting chances and goals.

 

Joey O'Brien a midfielder he isn't [should really be wasn't] a right back I thought he was, showed great promise, took the right-back spot like a Camel to porridge, but injuries play a big part in less known, less big name players, for example, when Rooney get's injured, he still get's talked about, the press, news, fans etc await his return, with fringe players at smaller clubs who get injuries, I'd say they find themselves struggling to regain a future at the club and eventually move on.

Wanderers players like Gardner for example have come back from set-backs, in Hunt's case, it seemed to stop him getting any real understanding, any real match time with different players who came in whilst he was on the sidelines, someone takes your place, for a player like Hunt, he's going to have to play out of his skin, show something new in training to get a considerable enough comeback chance.

We finished 8-6-8-7 in the league with Hunt as an ever present, he was not as bad as people make out, half the stadium slagging him off would not have helped his confidence, he went right down hill as soon as little sam give him a bumper 4 yr contract, he then turned into a cock, who would rather DJ than improve his footballing.

S over the years the academy has produced for the first team Nolan, Hunt and O'Brien. We really should be producing at least one player per season from the academy into the squad. Is it that the gulf to Premier League is too great, even with a season out on loan, or what?

Nicky Hunt was a decent player who lost his way by believing he was better than he was. Ricketts & Nolan went through similar phases.

When he was fit he played, I do not recall him ever being dropped! wether that was because we didnt have anyone else better im not sure

As said above, he thought he was better than he was, a bit like Michael Ricketts, though Ricketts could have been good with application and half a brain.

 

Hunt had very limited ability and was carried through the successful spell of top 10 finishes by a solid 3 alongside him. He can't tackle worth a fart and offers nothing going foprward but to be fair to him, he did work hard and closed wide players down ok. Hunt got a bad injury and he just never got back into the first team after it and to be honest I'm glad.

the difference between Hunt and Gardener is that when Gardener came back from injury he went in as hard as before Hunt seemed to go into the tackle wincing
