I may have had 37 pints since dinner, but I ask this because there is an owd bloke (86 I believe) called Burt on a boxing forum I go on who as a young man saw Sugar Ray Robinson at his welterweight prime - with ringside seats as well. He says that despite the thousands of big sports events he's seen since that one still gives him butterflies in his tummy, which puts a smile on my face, I think that is at the very least nice.

 

So it makes me think, what things in sport have you seen (preferably in person) which will stick with you forever and still bring a lump to your throat when you are 80 odd? Not counting Bolton stuff, that's obvious. But there are moments in sport which suddenly occur and you think 'fuck me, they'll talk about this for years...'

 

I have my thoughts but I'm youngish, anybody else?

Watching the all conquering Australian Rugby League side of 82 crush GB at Headingley 32-8, without doubt the finest team ever assembled in that sport. Watching Leigh beat Leeds in the challenge cup at Wembley 71, and all the famous Bolton games in the modern era.

I am sad to say I haven't seen any nationally iconic moments in the flesh that are non-Bolton related except for seeing Queen of the South beat Aberdeen 4-3 in a Scottish Cup semi final and coming from 2 goals down in the final to level at 2-2 against Rangers ( we lost 3-2 in the end)

 

These aren't things that will make any other sports fans heart miss a beat except for the 2-3000 QoS fans who are about but it is the single proudest moment of my life. That's not just sport related, I mean ever. I cried like a baby when Queens walked out at Hampden in the final and came home a week early from a holiday in Mauritius to see the Aberdeen semi-final, I got shit from my soon to be ex wife but it's the best decision I've ever made!!!

 

I am a 100% Bolton fan, but QoS are my home team and have never won a thing in their history. That was their first and only final

Walking into the uni sports centre weights room and finding Mary Rand (who was reigning Olympic long jump champion at the time) pressing phenomenal weights from a standing position. She was very special (and beautifully proportioned).

Never saw the cheating Dago but Zidane is without doubt the best footballer I have ever seen. You need to be something special to run a game and daft as it sounds Djorkaef could do that at Bolton.

This is going to sound really stupid but another moment I'll never forget was before a Scotland v England game at Hampden when the teams were warming up in front of me... and another 80 odd thousand Scots.

 

A ball was played over at least 50 yards at pace and in the air and I saw the most amazing piece of skill and control that I have ever seen, when the ball was cushioned on the chest and caught behind the neck, flicked up in the air and volleyed in one action back to the original passer... and you know who it was?

What a gent, its my mates 50th today and he's a huge Northern Soul fan and I was telling him how much of a idol he is to my buddy. He couldn't do enough, he's sending me a signed copy of his CD. Top nice chap in my eyes, loves music and got involved in every tune. Utmost respect

He played for Little Lever, just the once I think, and still holds the highest score for a Little Lever player in the Hamer Cup, set in 1961. What has happened to Bolton League cricket, when you look at the players it used to attract?

As an "event" I'd say Novemember 1981, England v Hungary. That was the WC campaign that included the inflamous "your boys took a hell of a beating" game and it looked like they'd screwed up yet another qualification. I knew I'd be down in London at university by the time that game was on so I thought I'd get a ticket anyhow, just to see Wembley...but by the time the game came round it had transformed into a situation where they just needed a draw to get to Spain. So all of a sudden its the hottest ticket in town; and the really memeorable thing about was that although I'd seen us in front of 30k+ at Burnden and 40k+ at Anfield, this was going to be 92k (night match capacity) in a terraced Wembley, so twice as big as owt I'd been to. So that made it memorable, made doubly so by the fact they qualified that night for the first time in lifetime (I wasn't born when they qualified for 1962, they didn't have to properly qualify for 66 or 70, and of course they failed for 74 and 78). So all in all top night

After I had been to a recording of "A Question of Sport" at the BBC in Manchester I had a piss next to Ian Botham.

 

Donna Hartley nee Murray, the golden girl of athletics at the time used to work in the Bootle branch of the Midland Bank. I was served by her a few times. She was quite a stunner but then got in to bodybuilding and now looks like a freak.

 

Talking of athletics I used to work in the same office as Jayne Christian who was a good sprinter but never quite made it to the very top.

I once had a piss next to Des Drummond.

I once trained next to him at Bolton Health Studio. He was on the exercise bike at the side of me. I was in pretty good shape at the time, but he was out of this world. It made me want to give up and eat doughnuts.

 

Had a similar experience at Bath University with Stephanie Cook, who won gold in the modern pentathlon in the 2000 Olympics. I could just about match her on the running machine, but after that stint, she hopped onto the exercise bike. I had to go and lie down in a corner.

Went to one of my first test matches in 1997 at Old Trafford for two of the dyas. Managed to see Warne bowl a ball at Crawley which was similar to the Gatting one but wothou the wicket, I was behind the end Warne was bowling at, as well as Waugh getting a ton also.

 

I went to Paris for the Rugby World Cup final and watched it under the Eiffel Tower on a big screen, it was bizaare but a great event to be at.

I know it's Bolton related, but meeting my childhood hero Per Frandsen in the players lounge as an 8 or 9 year old. I genuinely thought I was meeting god.
