Day in day out we hear criticism about teaching standards, the police, councils, the health service etc.Yet as football fans who follow our club's fortunes closely we're perhaps more qualified than most to have a bit of an insight in to the appalling standards of journalism that prevail in this country. Disregard the phone-hacking for now. Cast to one side the Daily Mail's habit of telling you that various varieties of food or drink are good for you one week only to then say they are bad for you the next. Instead just look at the long list of patently false rumours that have done the rounds this Summer with regards to Bolton Wanderers. At least three-quarters of what has been printed has been lacking at best and a pack of lies at worst. We all deserve better.

Never, ever trust a journalist.

PS: We're now being linked with Jimmy Bullard.

So don't buy papers :db:

PS I'd take a chance on Bullard on a free!

Having worked in that line, you need to understand that pages need to be filled, irrespective. Which is how stories like Pele to Bolton happen. These days they have far less credibility as word gets round via other means faster.

Of course they need to fill pages - but they need to get themselves off their fat idle arses and go out and find some real news instead of sitting in an office in the middle of an industrial estate and making it up as they go along. Is it too much to ask that what they put in to the public domain might have some truth about it?

When it comes to football rumour-mongering, sadly yes!

They don't want to upset the clubs and managers but the punters will still buy papers no matter what, balancing act that we lose.

I long since gave up on football rumours . UNTIL i see the player in a white shirt and the ref blowing his whistle i dont believe they have signed for us .

Footie gossip sells. We talk about it here all the time. Without it, we'll just have pages of whining.

Today the Daily Mirror have manged to fill some column inches with a story that we are interested in buying.................

Ngog, Wright-Philips and signing Boyata on loan.

Amazing news only read it eight times before in the same paper.

id have jimmy bullard on a pay per play basis only, as his knees are made of balsa wood. but the moron will shoot himself in the foot by wanting his rediculous 50 grand a week, which coyle will refuse to pay, and he will chip back to ipswich.

bullard wouldnt get in the team anyway.

he'd have to compete muamba, reo coker, pratley, mavies & holden.

we dont need another center mid.

not sure if he can play wide? not sure i would want him too?

can he play in net?

isn't the point in journalism to give an insight or bring forth a detail you may have overlooked?

With the tabloids small columns there is no way any journalist can expand an idea or story, however the broadsheets give more editorial space to there writers and so give the reader greater detail.

The internet is good but I still like to get paper and read good journalists like Gabrielle Marcotti who are excellent writers.

Posted

Exactly, although I'm not a Marcotti fan. People who read/buy the red tops don't want or expect much else. I read The Guardian's sport section and you can get some good analysis of games, without adopting the "those who understand the game" stance taken my most who have played the game.

What's sad is the bit in the middle, the local paper. Ours is a shambles with the new bloke basically acting like Gordon Sharrock Jnr. Surely there's a chance to give it a go and push the boundaries rather then recycling claptrap from here?

Posted

the old players union is the worst for me.

Just because these guys have played the game doesn't give them any greater insight into football, Cascarino, Ian Wright and any plank they get on talksport with the possible exception of Ray Houghton.

Posted

There was a good programme on the other week called Starsuckers where they showed how easy it was to get a made up story into the entertainment pages of the tabloids.

With the football gossip they dont even have to get any tips from Joe Punter - they just make it up.

Its pretty harmless to be fair in the scheme of things.

Posted

Tabloid papers, Talksport, etc aren't made for match attending football fans.

They're done to appeal to the armchair fan whose knowledge of football is limited to what these media outlets tell him and he sees Jamie Redknapp say on sky sports.

They'd never think to look into why everton have no money or why Harry Redknapp is a wobbly faced crooked wanker. They'll just believe the media image he's a top bloke.
