Tough one for me this.

 

Trouble is, he's by far and away our best player. Do we leave him at home purely on principle?

 

It wouldn't make sense to take another striker in his place who Capello would have no intention of playing simply to fill the squad.

 

Imagine the scenario, we could scrape our way out of the group. To bring Rooney back into a struggling side would surely be a huge lift to everyone. He'd be hungry and anxious to make amends.

 

... and that could lead him to do something rash and get a red card within minutes of being on the pitch.

 

That's the problem with having such mediocrity in so many of our positions.

 

FWIW I think Capello will take him. I think he'll think it's worth the risk and as he'll be leaving at the end of the tournament anway, he'll not be arsed about any flak he'd get if it goes tits up.

So what if he misses 3 games, he'll be straight back in, Beckham was hated for his red card against Argentina, death threats etc, but he came back, just like Rooney has already done in the past.

 

England even without Rooney have on paper some great players, even if we're not the best team wise, I would think we'll get through the group and then we'll be much better off with Rooney when we come to play knockout football against the bigger nations, we may still lose and play just as poor as like in SA, but we'd still have a better chance with Rooney, his talent is far greater than the chance he may get sent off again imo.

 

Rooney kicked out and got a red card, he was a nob for doing it, but he contributed towards our qualification with goals and assists and he's by far our best player, when on form he could be the difference, England with a suspended Rooney are better than an England with no Rooney and someone average like Caroll.
