The Idiot Tax Aka The National Lottery. Have You...

I was going through my books and came across a Doors Guitar tab book, after I wiped the book clean I noticed on the inside cover, in marker pen, six numbers I recognised as myself and my then GF's old lottery numbers.

I put these on for about 3 years until I missed a draw and fucked it off for good.

I thought I'd check (using this site) if these numbers had won anything in the intervening years (late 1997 until present)...

Historical Lottery Number Checker - Scroll down and enter 'your' numbers.

There's been approximately 728 weeks passed since I stopped doing it, two draws a week = 1456 draws.

I'd have spent ?1456...

According to the Lottery-checker, I'd have won ?387 - 35 times winning ?10 and 1 solitary occasion winning ?37.

Proving (to me) conclusively that it is nowt but a hidden tax for deluded fools.

Fair fucks to him, I hope he enjoys it. But consider this, they could have had around ?2400 off me and Leigh White alone.

And those who put regular numbers on, and have done habitually, for a while (perhaps since it started even). What would they do if they said they were going to have a Lotto draw every day? Two draws every day? A quid is neither here nor there but you see some folk putting on shedloads (using those quickdraw things - I know some will be syndicates).

Maybe I'm bitter because I was ruined as a 16/17 year old Pools collector when that shite started. Every f*cker sacked Vernons off and my nice earner (for one night of 'work') went quickly down the pan.

I've just spent 20 minutes inputting random lots of six numbers into that results-checker (it's either that or watching a French 'comedy' sketch show - in French btw).

I must have tried about 40 odd different lines - the most won was ?489, the least ?301 (this is from entering every draw - since the lottery started in 1994).

I've not checked the site yet because I'm on my phone but didn't Wednesday draws start much later, so you wouldn't of been as bad off :)

You sound the type of bloke who tells kids there's no Father Christmas, runs over kids toys and splashes people at bus stops.

It seems like my ?190 numbers must be exceptionally bad then.7 8 13 20 23 31.

Me and my boss years back made a dart board and threw a pen at it to pick out numbers. For some reason I still remember them:

Anyhow,

We checked your numbers against 1659 draws dating back to Sat 17 Dec 1994 and found that you would have had 33 wins totaling ?330.00 in prize money.

Good job I no longer do it.

We checked your numbers against 1320 draws dating back to Sat 26 Apr 1995 and found that you would have had 42 wins totaling ?6,876,253 in prize money.

1659 draws for ?452.00 ? Well they can fck off.

I ain't looking, knowing my luck I would have won a tidy sum and that would put more than a little crimp on my day.

I don't see why people have an issue with the Lottery.

Yes, chances are you're throwing your money away.

However two and a half thousand folk are now millionaires because of it.

Whenever you buy that ticket, chances are it WON'T be you, but someone usually wins it. If you can afford ?1 per week then why not have a try.

... although it used to piss me off when I was at the ciggie counter at Sainsburys and there'd always be an old cunt in front of me putting on umpteen lines, then checking last week's tickets and then buying millions of scratchcards. Old cunts do like a flutter.

I got five numbers few weeks ago. Won ?1508.

Still pissed off onemore was 4 M

You can beat the odds though.

Chances of winning are 1 in 13,983,816.

Say you purchase tickets for 50 years, you would need to spend 279677 a year, thats 5378 a week.

The average jackpot per person for 6 numbers is 2,100,000.

Unless you win it within the first 7 and a half years you are out of pocket though.

There's only that and Bingo they've got to spend their pension on.

My dad got 5 numbers 2 weeks ago, he got ?1500, the jackpot was shared by 8 people giving them under half a million each, I would have been gutted to get 6 numbers and not get at least a million

I only checked the dates since I stopped doing it until this Wednesday - to see what I could've won...I stopped around November '97, the Wednesday draw was introduced in February '97.

Sounds stupid but there are numbers that seem to come up more often - so perhaps you do have a 'shit' line Butterfly.

Although this seems highly illogical - feckin' hell, I sound like a Doctor Spock/Father Christmas denier hybrid.

The disparity between the prize for 5 numbers and that for 6 is another reason I stopped. I definitely must be a glass-half full tw*t, because if I won ?1500 for five I'd be using ?10 of it on a length of rope.

What would make it even worse, although again daft and meaningless - would be missing out on millions by one digit, say if you had 46 in your line but the sixth and final number was 45 or 47.

Bigtoe - please tell us your taking the piss...

If I won around half a million (which is never going to happen as I don't do it - or put it on when pissed, and lose the ticket). Anyway if I won the jackpot and the share was so low - I wouldn't tell anyone, and I mean nobody, like Eddie Murphy in 'Coming to America'.

I wouldn't be mean, I'd share the wealth - but would keep the source a secret. What kind of f*ckwit wins untold millions (I'm thinking of that 'Euromillions' couple who won that obscene amount) then agrees to have their stupid, grinning mugs - opening Champagne and accompanied by their real names, plastered all over the tabloids?

Would you fook

If you entered a prize draw for a car - a top of the range Alfa/Audi/Mercedes etc.

You were then informed you'd won first prize, but there'd been a mix up and the prize was actually

a Nissan Micra. You'd accept it/use it, but I wager you'd treat it with contempt, disgust and

resentment - it'd probably be a write-off within a year...

A lad from Bamber Bridge was one number off winning ?100m on the euro millions and got ?4k. (4 main numbers and 2 stars)

Flip side... I know a lad who won ?2.8m

It is what it is, if you are spending ?2 a week then you aint going to miss it. Its ok adding up how much you have spent over the years etc and coming to ?1500 but imagine how much you have spent on beer in the same period! Probably buy yourself a bloody big house.

Better off betting on the Irish lottery, get the correct odds for what you are betting on, think it's about 300/1 for 3 numbers, don't do it myself so someone might correct me.

We checked your numbers against 1659 draws dating back to Sat 09 Dec 1995 and found that you would have had 35 wins totaling ?93,193.00 in prize money.

bad decision to stop doing it by all accounts

I'd have had 30 wins totalling ?457 from my numbers the first week

If I do ever have a go I use the same numbers still

Don't see the harm in it though
