Try the Mathew Shardlake series by C.J.Sansom

 

Historical novels set in Tudor Times. Murders aplenty.

Read a couple of Andy McNab books; Remote Control and Crossfire.

 

Beltin reads if you like McNab.

The Rise & Fall of the Third Reich.

 

You'll probably get the standard ones on here like 'The Damage Done', 'Marching Powder' etc, all worthwhile reads.

This was something I had to read, in part, for a dissertation. I did enjoy it so went back and read it in it's entirety since.

 

I recently tried to go all 'Late Review' and tried to read Crime and Punishment - 'kinell, if anyone's got past thirty pages of that I take my hat off. Must have lost something in translation, or I'm a total ignoramus/philistine.

In 1941 Berek Jakubowicz (now Benjamin Jacobs) was deported from his Polish village and remained a prisoner of the Reich until the final days of the war. His possession of a few dental tools and rudimentary skills saved his life. Jacobs helped assemble V1 and V2 rockets in Buchenwald and Dora-Mittelbau; spent a year and a half in Auschwitz, where he was forced to remove gold teeth from corpses; and survived the RAF attack on three ocean liners turned prison camps in the Bay of Lubeck.

 

The synopsis really doesn't do the memoir justice. It is an unbelievable story (literally at times) and Jacobs "luck" is amazing.

Absolutely loved it on holiday just gone, I read shit loads of books without having to haul em about whilst the wife read heat magazine and other such drivel.

 

Just gotta start reading more at home now.
