Anyone heard of/had one before?

Lived in Bolton all my life and it's always been a barm.

 

Never been asked or asked myself for a chip flour cake or a bacon flour cake, maybe because it sounds feminine ( flour=flower)

 

As for pasty barms, they're nice, but it's just a pasty on a barm, nothing special, The pasties at Dutson's bakery on Bury Road are special though, could quite gladly eat them for every meal 24-7.

The barm/flour cake must have a light spread of butter and a dollop of HP brown on it.

 

I always get them from Carrs now since Ye Olde pastie shop has closed on Saturdays - shame.

 

Both good pasties though, but Ye Olde wins it for me as we always used to get them on a matchday and have em before we made the walk down to Burnden, and they bring back good memories!

North mancs call them muffins, the rest of the manc region call them barms.They just call them buns in the Furness.area.

My dentist (next to Black Horse on Bury Rd) gives its address at Breightmet. He's fuck all to do with us!

 

I think Cassie is right on the flour cake front, barm is a relatively new term. My Gran called them flour cakes after a life working at I think Laidlaw's and Cheadle's bakers.

.....and mine worked at Youngs on Tonge Moor Rd. next tert Methodist church (who remembers that then?). Always 'flour cakes'.

Only good thing about my secondry schooldays at Heyward was the pasty barms. Used to be a pie shop right outside the Lever Gates & the one on on Morris Green Lane. My particular favourite was the one on the housing estate ( Grammar Gates Exit ) which did Pasty Cob's took some eating to get through to the pasty but always worth it. No wonder I was a fat fecker at school though.

Useless fact time - I'm one of the youngs grandchildren but I'm not old enough to remember the bakery. My grandad sold the bakery and ended up the landlord of the black dog in belmont

My Gran sold bacon barms, pie barms, pastie barms etc on Wigan Road in Deane for years - Mrs Thorpe, anyone remember her from 70s and 80s?

 

Other Gran lived in Farnworth and as a lad I remember being sent to the bakers near Harper Green School for flour cakes.

 

Both were exactly the same things & lovely with loads of butter and home made pickled onions on.

Let's get one thing straight here. A flour cake isn't a barm. A flour cake is like a barm but is rolled in flour. Barms are just the bread bit.

When is a butty a butty? Can a sandwich without butter/spread be rightfully classed as a butty? Is buttered bread alone Ok to be referred to as a butty? These are important questions that need answering...

 

Incidentally I made an enquiry with a mate who's a baker, he said 'barm' is an old term for scrap yeasted dough mix that wasn't baked off, but kept reserved to kickstart the rising/proving of the next days dough. He reckons it became a generic term for any scrap dough left over after making loaves - unable to fill a tin with it, they'd instead make flourcakes, cobs, rolls, barmcakes or (just for Casino) muffins.

 

What they didn't make with this includes - 'teacakes' and 'buns'.

Me too. Apart from the fat fecker bit!

...I was in Dalton-In-Furness recently and was told a flourcake was, in fact, a teacake - I asked her why it had no currants and she replied "what? with chips..?"

Leigh White is right, the lass in the chippy in Dalton did call it a chip bun - I still asked why were there no currants in it though. The place where I asked for a chip barm, and was told it was a teacake was in fact, Colne.

radcliffe became a bolton overspill in the 60's with plenty folk from that side of town moving into modern properties that were being built on the bury/bolton border

 

continued in the 80s with the closure of dobbies, mathers and the railway

It used to be a flourcake many years ago in Bolton. Since the influx of Mancs now wanting to live in our area rather than the ghettos the word barm crept into the good old Bolton language.

 

It's still a fucking flourcake take note Mancs, 'flourcake'.

I worked in Huddersfield for a couple of years and it was teacake. When I took issue with this and mentioned currants, they said 'nay lad, that's a fruit teacake'.
