We'd been smashing up Europe for years until English clubs were banned after Liverpool fans killed 39 people at a cup final.

 

There was a reason the fence at the Leppings Lane end was designed to keep folk in rather than let them out (remember Luton v Millwall?)

 

It's all well and good saying fans were treated like shit but there was a significant minority who brought that on themselves and everyone else who attended football matches in the 80s.
