October 28, 201213 yr Do any of the scholars of the beautiful game want to stick their necks out on this? I've not a clue but it has to be dougies first job to stop us shipping goals - we've had many a tinkering with defence and formations and precisely fuck all has worked so if I had to do something I think I'd go wholesale - drop Bogdan ASAP re lonergan being out - get Riley in - play ricketts and Mills at centre half - play chungy and Wylde as the wingers in a 5 man midfield to protect the full backs - play ngog up front with eagles just behind and Davies m as the other flair player The successful teams we've had in the last 10-15 years have all had great balance one players weakness being complimented by another strength - many keep saying we have a great squad and on paper we do but maybe amongst them we just do not have a balanced side the more I think about it the more we look like shite England teams well just England teams?
October 28, 201213 yr No place for Petrov? I'm surprised as he's the only player who can consistently put a ball over the first defender's head be it from open play or set pieces.
October 28, 201213 yr Basically we need solid defenders. Look back through our past seasons when we have been successful and you will notice solid consistent defenders. Jones and Allardyce era with Ritson and Dunne for example. More recent Gudni and Bruno.
October 28, 201213 yr dont know but unless we stop shipping goals we are going to be in a relegation battle-if anyones noticed we are 3 points off 3rd from bottom with the top 2 to play next -wake up everyone

October 28, 201213 yr For me it's the 2 in the middle of midfield not strong enough to cover for 2 genuine wingers, get a 3 rd centre mid in if you want to play the wide men and go 4-3-3.

Jones and Allardyce era with Ritson and Dunne for example. More recent Gudni and Bruno. Who would you say was out solid defenders during the allardyce super seasons? Ben haim? Jaidi? In his last season 2006 our defenders were.... Hunt - played 32 Meite - played 35 haim - played 30 Faye (although he played def mid often) - played 29 gardner- played 13 Then Michalik, fojut and Fortune And going off general consensus... Haim was decent but is now shite, faye was a slow arsed thug and Meite was a soft twat who lost all credibility after the man u debacle. Not having its the defence thats the problem, its not having Faye, Speed, campo and nolan sat infront of you, jumping on everything that came near
October 29, 201213 yr Author Lonergan, Wylde and Riley? Jesus wept. And your formula for plugging our leaky defence would be? The rational behind the three choices I made that you have referred to are bogdan is costing us goals and lonergan is proven at this level if he were fit obviously - Riley has looked a good solid defender when he played mears has been pretty woeful this year and Wylde would add better defensive cover in the mould of a Matty Taylor yes we'd lose petrovs forward play but we have got to get a more solid midfield chungy does the dirty work on the right to, eagles is our top scorer and playing very well - we've got to start making some sacrifices in attacking areas don't we?
October 29, 201213 yr We can't do anything about the keeper for a few weeks so we're stuck with bogdan. Yes, I'd put Riley at right back. I'd play Pratley too in a 5 man midfield with mavies, spearing, chungy and eagles with Sordell up top on his own
October 29, 201213 yr Get a first 11 sorted, train the buggers into the ground and use common sense when using subs. Have the idea that Crystal Palace have been doing well by playing fairly defensively, especially on the break. Wouldn't be surprised if we went down that route for next few games. Bit like they did against us. At which point everyone will moan about us being negative.

That defence shipped goals in the old 1st division but was compensated for by goals scored by Worthington and gowling. Can remeber Ian Greaves saying he tought on promotion he thought we would have a solid defence but struggle to score and how wrong he was in retrospect.

Bit like they did against us. At which point everyone will moan about us being negative. a few of us won't the point is, with the individual talent we possess, its the perfect way to play rock solid defensively, then let the likes of eagles, davies, petrov and lee do their stuff we could even play the old 'let's rely on set pieces' routine with the ability eagles has
October 29, 201213 yr don't defend in numbers hesitant to make decisions don't close down poor marking lack of communication from the back lack of shape lack of awareness homework not done
October 29, 201213 yr Centre backs and right back need sorting. Riley for Mears. Mills or Knight with Ricketts, the donkey will deal with the high balls and ricketts will read the game and cover. Let Spearing sit in front of centre backs and mop up / snot anything in that zone that moves. Bogdan is a decent keeper, just had nothing in front to protect him. Riley is better on the ball than Mears and also a lot better defensively. Edited October 29, 201213 yr by Ratwhite
October 29, 201213 yr Its all Mears fault. Every goal is his fault. How many goals has he cost us this season?
October 29, 201213 yr i'd say one think it was him who completely missed the low corner taht led to the penalty at sheffield might've been ngog, tho! anyway, defensively, he's not been atrocious i've been surprised at how poor he is going forward, but thats hardly a priority
