Book with a firm that provides the clothing, winter jackets etc bought over here no matter how good will simply not be up to the job of -20 plus wind chill.

Take plenty spends as its not cheap but well worth it. We went to Levi and had a great time but would probably go somewhere else when the little one is old enough in a couple of years.

My grandad has taken me, my three siblings and my cousin all on day trips in the past, I'll ask him when I see him tomorrow.

And you must be saving a fortune at the moment :)

need to spend my cash on something???? just read forums online and it's so mixed from one review to the next. I'm looking at a 3night stay but it's just choosing the resort!

RW1, I remember going through this a couple of years ago but if you are going for a few days I highly recommend a resort called Hetta which is in the far North of Finnish lapland.

It is really quiet and not commercialised at all which is what we were after, still had all activities obviously, but town was quiet and we went to really nice carol service in local church.

It also has a local airport, Enontekia, so transfers were short which is a bonus with little kids. I can't actually remember which company we went with but all the activities were done by a third party firm anyway?

Good luck

thanks I will look that place up,it's like when you go online some feedback says get outdoor clothes included as your normal gear won't handle the temp and watch out for what is and not included like activities. Basically we want the meet santa and then probably husky, snow mobile rides, toboggan etc.

If you go with the likes of First Choice etc then you should get clothing, Santa, snow mobile and either husky or raindeer ride included. The husky ride is excellent as they are really quick but note they are usually only taster sessions. Our lad was only 4 at the time so a 5 minute ride on the snow mobile was enough for him anyway. We went on a half hour raindeer sleigh ride and he fell asleep!

To be fair it is very good too but obviously not a patch on the real thing.

I hate to break this to you Winchester White, but, given your age, I thinks it's time someone told you the truth...

Oh fuck it, I haven't got the heart to do it at this time of year...

:)

Whoever thought of this idea must be laughing, who, apart from black metal fans would want to visit Finland at any time of the year, let alone now, in winter?

Take them to that indoor ski place near Eccles and get a Father Christmas outfit from Poundland, antlers on the dog, job's a good 'un.

We were provided with big insulated suits and boots & possibly gloves?, all looked like Big Chris off Roary! So the only thing we bought in advance were some decent thermals and socks from Decathlon but we did get the kids some snow boots in advance just in case the ones at the resort were poor. Hats, Gloves, Fleeces and Scarves we had anyway and we were fine with this kit list. Temp was anything from -13 to -20 during our visit but as it is so dry with little wind it doesn't really  feel that cold to be honest, and we had no trouble at all. Plus they have lots of shelters and hot drink stops to keep you warmed up.

However, apparently the week before it had gone below -35 and lots of activities had to be curtailed as kids were just too cold, I think this was the exception rather than the rule though and it wouldn't matter what clothing you took if its that cold as you won't be going out much!!

Hope this helps, happy new year....

Now ones a chelsea fan and the other has only been to the reebok once this season and shows no signs of going back

thats what happens when you spoil the little shits

Pretty much what everyone else has said re the clothing. We went on the one day Santa trip to Rovaniemi in 2004 which was good back then but bloody tiring. Then the year after did boxing day to Jan 2nd at a small beautiful ski resort called Luosto. We stayed in a log cabin with real log fire and sauna and were only 500 metres from the resort. Fantastic place with easy access to skiing sledging, cross country skiing, husky rides, ice fishing and midnight reindeer safari which took 4 hours in minus 25C temps...brrrr.

The best thing about this place was is its scenary and its numerous cross country ski paths cut through the forests. But the knock over is the skidoo tracks that go for miles and miles through the forests. We simply booked a local guide for half a day and hired the skidoos.

There is also a famous gem mine (purple gemstones) of some kind at the top of the mountain you can visit which we did at the crack of dawn (10:00am in December) pics below of the top of mountain and one of the cross country tracks.

Expensive though back then so god knows what it costs now. Only drawback is the limited daylight hours at that time of year - half light from 10.00 to 11.00 and 13:00 to 14:00 and then daylight between 11:00 and 13:00. Better if its a blue sky day. Feb is better for daylight but then thats the time fins tend to holiday from Helsinki so it gets busy.
