Spurs were last title winners in 1961 and Liverpool 1990.

Agreed. It’s odd it became the champions league when it was opened up to non champions.

It was the Champions' Cup, straight knockout, before it became the Champions' League.

But it was never actually restricted to champions. The name was simply because UEFA wanted to reserve the name European Cup for an international team tournament.

And DMBs were invited after their accident but the FA/EFL kiboshed that.

It was commonly referred to as such, but its correct name included Champions'.

The book that tells me that on page 1 is even called European Cup 1955-80.
