hes our top scorer

drop him

boooooooooooooooooo

Just been reading the Wikipedia page on Ricardo Gardner. We paid £1,000,000 for him 18 years ago when we were in the same division as we are now.

Puts our current finances into perspective.

I think we had some decent money from player sales at that time, Alan Thompson?

Also puts into perspective how bad a job Gartside has done for a supposed businessman to run the club virtually into the ground is tantamount to a dereliction of duty.

Maybe that helped push us towards liquidation when burnden leisure went bust and ED helped bail us out

Whilst Ricky was a great signing and clearly helped us get back to the prem, perhaps if we hadn't overspent to get promotion then we would never have gone bust and never needed ED's support

We wouldn't have had ten years at the top either mind but at least the fans who hate ED & PG would have been happy

curcic, stubbs?

They were two years prior to Gardner signing, and the summer in between we spunked a load of cash on Neil Cox, Robbie Elliott and Dean Holdsworth.

£1m for Gardner. £25m underestimate of the move to Lostock.

Hmmmmm .......... Wonder which might have started our financial decline.

Maybe a bit of both

How much were Gardener's wages? How much on Cox, Elliott & Holdsworth as has been stated?

Did they really underestimate the ground move by £25m? I thought the whole job only came to £30m+

Either way you cut the cake we overspent to buy a squad and facilities to get us to the top. It worked and we had ten great years but came at the cost of us nearly going bust if it wasn't for ED's bailing us out

I just don't see how he gets the grief he does

i think thev underestimate and the total cost are about right

we thought we could sell burnden for 30 million

john prescotts dept changed the planning rules and the land value plummeted

obvs, we shouldve seen it coming

fair enough

was from memory and i forgot we'd been relegated twice :)

I'm not having a pop by the way. I've no idea what the financial situation was at the time. Just highlighting how things have changed.

Cracking singning mind! :-)

I must get a little hazy with finances as I was 18 when we moved to the Macron and I really didn't pay much attention at the time. In my own head - I'd always though ED bankrolled us to the prem and paid for the stadium? Is that not right - did he come in at a later stage when we were floundering financially?

he was fantastic

Did he ever get a testimonial? Can't remember

Think Super John got the last one I can think of. Or did Hussi have one against Hibs

Hargreeves and co were still in charger when we built the reebok.

Plans were passed for the reebok in 1994,long before ED.

Crazy to think we were on the brink of going out of business and getting saved by normid only 6-7 years previous.

Think I read Gartside got introduced to ED when we were playing the Dmb's one year. ED had a few ideas of how the club could be run.Gartside and Allardyce then paid him a visit when we were in financial shit and persuaded him to buy the club.

I could be totally wrong BTW.

I was of the impression he came in and took the clubs debt on from the banks who were calling it in at the time. Think it was circa 2001 when the .com bubble burst and there was a bit of a recession

I thought it was ariund about the time we got promoted / first season in prem

it all depends what you want to believe

for me, we were in a hole and he helped us out of it

theres a few former shareholders on here hold a view that ED stole the club from them

its something i struggle to buy into as the shares were worth more as bog roll

Is that in the Burnden Leisure days? I remember looking how our share prices were doing in the Sun :-)

They were never very good by the way!

The shares remain current

Worthless, but current

it was all very complicated to a thicko like me

but, when were promoted (the time we bought elliot and holdsworth) we needed cash

this was before davies

it was before pg was chairman but he may have been on the board

we got involved with this mosaic outfit who had some money and burnden leisure was formed and floated of the market

i think share price was 37p and i think they quickly rose

following relegation and a realisation football clubs at our level were a shitty investment they were worthless

davies was already in for a few million and (so the story goes) said he would back us but he wanted all the shares

he got them

my understanding is that davies owns all of them?

bought for fractions of a penny, each

He bought us when we were in trouble financially for a song, from memory about 14 million. I find it hard to believe that a trained accountant Gartside and a successful business man like E.D. Have allowed the club they love to get into this position, regardless of our success over the 10 year the pair of them will be ultimately judged on where they leave the club when they hand over the reins, here's hoping they get the right buyer for the club and that when they do we're not playing in league 1 or 2.
