November 3, 20169 yr It maybe my memory but news and other presenters used to wear them in the 60's as 70's. A few cranks Facebook is no measure of something being hijacked. The problem as I see it is people of the liberal left creating a problem where previously there was none. Take my avatar for example. You seem from a your offhand jibe on the last page to see it as provocative. To me we should be proud of our flag. FFS every other country is proud of theirs.Yet many on the left over the past 30 years have denigrated it and deliberately viewed it racist. Remember Thornberry's tweet? Sorry, but to me people of a leftist persuasion seem to hate people taking pride in ones country. They also dislike traditions and seek label them with the R word at the drop of a hat. Interesting point bgoefc! I'm far from a jingoist or nationalist, in fact I kind of hope for a day when borders are a distant memory - but that's just me, ever the dreamer That said, on a relative level, I'm proud to be English/British and I find people that see anything pro-English as negative or racist as well, a bit er . . . racist?!? (for e.g. if FIFA sanction Scot or Eng for wearing poppies then I would argue they have a good discrimination case as they allowed Ire to openly flaunt a political/national ideology very recently - and whether a poppy is political/national is open to debate) I think the tide has shifted somewhat lately, but certainly ten years or so ago the general social ideal had shifted too far to the left imo. I was once told not to talk about immigration at work as it would offend people . . . seriously! It's a shame though that a minority do use English symbolism in-conjunction with far right/xenophobic views - much like how many use Islam . . .

Utter crap and completely missing the point. Sorry, can't really finesse it any better. November 3, 20169 yr Can you give some examples? the whole james mcclean thing is on the radar again whilst he might be a cunt, whatever his reasons are, he shouldn't have to wear one if he doesn't want to but when he chooses not to, he has to then defend his stance, and whilst he might be misguided or whatever, it creates a whole shitstorm that shouldn't come about in the first place normally ending with "if you don't like it, fuck off" it should be up to him, and he shouldn't have to say why, cunt that he is (e.g. he should just stand there say ignore when the national anthem is playing, not turn his back) Edited November 3, 20169 yr by ZicoKelly
November 3, 20169 yr My fear is that to an extent it's become hijacked as a symbol of nationalism over the past few years as opposed to a mark of respect and a reminder of the horror of war. People that say things like this go on about the Spanish Civil War when that anniversary comes around because some Wobblies died somewhere. Everyone has their own thing that seems nationalist/racist/whatever to others. Not sure what the end game is of people who decide that certain things are offensive , but classifying everything as potentially racist will probably get some pushback. It's a grifters tactic. reminds me of this Washington Redskins name thing , the people who should be offended don't give a fuck, but some whitey know-it-alls say they should be.
November 3, 20169 yr I'm presuming he means the bleeding heart wet fish liberals et al who marched off to volunteer/fight against the fascists in the Spanish Civil War and died as a result - soft c*nts. (jelly - wobblies? Fuck knows, anyone's guess is as good as mine). Edited November 3, 20169 yr by Youri McAnespie

Sorry, but to me people of a leftist persuasion seem to hate people taking pride in ones country. They also dislike traditions and seek label them with the R word at the drop of a hat. First off - I don't know who Thornberry is so I've no idea what tweet you're on about. Your avatar - the point is (and this is my own prejudice) when I see it, I make an assumption about what type of person you are. Now I could well be completely wrong - but the point is when I see somebody with an England flag nowadays (especially one with a shield around it) the connotation isn't one of, 'there's a person who's proud of his countries heritage' - it's 'there's a person who probably hates immigrants'. So yes - I do see it as provocative. That's not your fault - it's just because like it or not - St George's flag has as many negative connotations as it does positive. A bit like when Germany didn't fly their flag for years because people associated it with the far right. It was only after they held the World Cup that your average man in the street started to fly it again. My whole point is - I don't want to see the poppy go the same way - but I fear it is, and that's a shame. On the other hand - I did just buy one from the couple in Morrison's. As for being of a leftist persuasion - I don't really view myself as that - although it's sometimes easier to just use that terminology - I'd say I'm more of a pragmatist really. But anyway - I am immensely proud of my country, but I also acknowledge its faults. That's the difference between being a patriot and a nationalist for me. And nobody is calling the tradition of wearing a poppy or flying an England flag racist. At least I'm not. I'm saying that symbols are powerful and their interpretation can mean different things to different people.
November 3, 20169 yr This Irish 1916 shirt makes a bit of a joke of it all. FIFA reckon Ireland never asked and they might punish them for it now. If they do anything to the British they'll have to I suppose.

I'm saying that symbols are powerful and their interpretation can mean different things to different people. Fair enough, time to agree to disagree I think. I think you fall into a trap re the St. Georges flag. Its hated by the left as are crusaders which I find strange as they simply went to liberate a conquered country. I use it because I refuse to bow to the PC crowd who claim its racist. Anyhow its Emily Thornberry, labours shadow foreign secretary who in the run up to a bye election took a picture of a house with St. Georges flags and a white van outside then posted a sneering comment on twitter. She subsequently stood down from Millibands shadow cabinet after he condemned her. Corbyn reinstated her as no doubt he agrees with her views.
November 3, 20169 yr Oh that Thornberry - and that tweet. It was a stupid thing for an elected official to do. Especially as she'd tweeted a similar looking house a year earlier saying how great it looked.
November 3, 20169 yr The left hates crusaders? That's got to be a juicy worm... I dunno in what universe there's criticism of the crusades or crusaders. There's probably stuff knocking the likes of Britain First who are big on all that imagery, but the actual historical figures? As an aside, did you know there was a Crusade to the Baltic region - in order to implement their invader middle eastern religion on the native european pagans? Anyhow, I had a book about the topic (the Eastern crusades) as a kid, loads of great paintings, anyone with a curved sword and curly shoes had it coming imo, not the pagans though. November 4, 20169 yr Has anyone posted the picture of the Argentian team holding a banner about the Falklands yet?
November 4, 20169 yr Of course, political statements don't happen anywhere else. I think the rules state that they can't be on the shirt Nothing wrong with dropping a million poppies from the roof though The Irish are getting charged by FIFA now so at least we have no hypocracy
November 4, 20169 yr Has anyone posted the picture of the Argentian team holding a banner about the Falklands yet? You shouldn't draw a comparison between nationalistic tub thumping like that and the poppy.
November 4, 20169 yr You shouldn't draw a comparison between nationalistic tub thumping like that and the poppy. No, you shouldn't, but it seems FIFA can.
November 5, 20169 yr This is getting a bit silly. This sudden fear that the whole country has turned into nationalist racists overnight is rubbish. Poppies like English flag have nothing to do with nationalistic far right tendencies never have had. If people are worried about a swing to the right in politics I ask you this where are the National Front? where are the BNP?

Their like will always exist and there will always be folk taken in by the backwards ideology spouted by these not rights. The job of all normal folk is to counter them with mockery and derision rather than turning into the UAF angry mob and stoking the fire
November 5, 20169 yr The job of all normal folk is to counter them with mockery and derision rather than turning into the UAF angry mob and stoking the fire Thank God that working class Londoners went toe to toe to stop facists marching through Jewish areas of the East End in the 30's rather than resorting to gentle mockery and satire.
November 12, 20169 yr 3-0 routine win. Always nice to beat those rebellious twats. Suck that Sturgeon.
