We've just won promotion using a gaggle of players nobody else wanted, littered with injury plagued loanees and players that were cast as cart horses, one trick ponies and generally weak as piss.

  • Like when we went up from league 2, we needed tried and tested players from that specific division/level to deal with the task in hand. Doyle and Sarcs etc. We need exactly the same in this divis

Think Everton got £40m for Lescott same time as we got a paltry £6m for Cahill.

just shows how a small, rubbish run club like ours can easily be bullied

This is the crux of the issue, bad management which includes being a forced seller of players whose contracts we were running down as we couldn't afford to offer new ones.   Whilst the current raft of 4 year deals may not all work, someone will have to pay to buy anyone successful off us.

We had decent sell on fees for some young players who we'd let go, but Kenneth called all the clubs up to negotiate buying the clause out for quick cash. We got an additional £100k or something stupid for Holding who at one stage was being discussed for a £22m move somewhere with 20% due back to us

We sold Eudir to Chelsea for a million less than Leicester paid for Ade Akinbiyi around the same time.

it was also the best offer we got, mainly cos clubs couldn't get insurance on him at the time

On the flip side, we got £4.5m or something for Arnar Gunlaugsson so that was pretty good...

I had it as £1.5m in my head but this says he went for £2.5m

Which is funny because I also found this that says we were expecting a £3.5m bid

Yeah we signed him for around £8m then doubled our money in 18 months

Many teams have their own version of Big Dave these days. Rotherham, Blackpool, Accrington Salford for example  all have land of the giants up front.  Dave is v effective at winning free kicks high up the pitch so whilst he can bully, he's also clever.

I didn't see the tranmere match, but the report said their CB, a 29yr old with 370 appearances for port Vale, was grappling and pulling to try and contain him. Hopefully you'll get to see what I mean. He was great a drawing a foul near the area last season.

But footballing wise there's Rice, a v fast  direct and physically strong left winger, low centre of gravity and great at getting to the byline and crossing, smith a 6ft 2 powerful and skillful right back, lawrence is a wiley 10 who can finish and build up well. Theres some good quarterback style midfielders who will need to get bigger. Hogan is a v tough no nonsense centre back great in the air. And there's a few in the 18s who might get a sniff too. Good crop.

Every time I've seen them (admittedly only a handful of times) the Right Back, Smith, has always stood out to me as looking a cut above most if just physically rather than anything else. It has made me wonder whether having an eye on him coming through is why we haven't rushed to signing a backup for the first team.

Then jizzed the profit on Elmander :(

Getting £9.5m for Clough and Madine should've lead to criminal charges and prison sentences.

To be fair at the time nobody thought Forest had overpaid.  Clough looked certain to have a career at championship level, as bad as it went for him I still remember some of his goals were outstanding, he had talent.

As compared to Madine where none of us could believe the fee and still can't 😀

Clough was a very good Championship player who had bad luck with injuries

Started off well at Forest but new manager came in, he got injured again and that was that

During his first spell with us he was a joy to watch and one of the only things worth going to the match for when the club was falling apart

Who was shite and wasted under Megson for two seasons, came good under Coyle getting double figures for the season but was too late as his contract ran out and he left on a free

Lies we all know we only sell for 4.5 million

I don't remember the 2nd spell 🤯

Championship too I reckon. Obviously if we get to prem in 5 yrs wed need to buy in shed loads to survive.

You know more about this than most, but as mentioned we've probably only had 2/3 Championship quality players come through the Academy in 20 years (Holding, Bartley... any others?). It's a big shout that the same number are in the current U18s lot.

he came back on loan 18 months later, that season we stayed up on last day v Forest, January dead line loan till end of the season

dunno if he get injured, only played 8 times so probably did, was on the bench when we beat Villa in that blizzard

We got £2.5m for Rob Holding from Arsenal around the same time David Brooks went from Sheffield Utd to Bournemouth for £11.5m, whilst City signed Patrick Roberts from Fulham for £12m

I know we had financial issues but seeing young lads with barely a season of championship football under their belts go for £10m+ and we got fuck all was just further evidence of us being wank in the transfer market

Particularly when RH went on to have the best PL career of the 3 of them

We should undoubtedly have got more than £2.5mil for Holding, but I'd argue about him having a better Prem career.  I'd say he's got found out at that level, and he can't get in the Palace team.  Arsenal picked him more than they intended because of injuries and he didn't cover himself in glory the season they blew the title.

Brooks is still playing for Bournemouth and Wales after recovering from cancer.

I'd have Holding back here any day but I think his Prem days are behind him.

aye but he played in a team challenging for titles and CL football, in the actual CL and won 2 FA Cups

Brooks hasn't

whatever way you look at it, he's had a better top flight career

I'd say he's had the most successful career of any of our academy graduates.

Probably yes.

He was affected by early hair loss which affected his confidence.

Transplant soon sorted it.
