Big reason for sustained house price rises is cheap borrowing. Big difference in repayments when interest rates are typically 2.5% rather than 10%. Think i read somewhere repayments at 10% on loan amount X, are same at 2.5% for twice X.

Yep. Interest rates were typically 8% in  1997. Much higher previously. Typically 3% now or lower. On a £150,000 mortgage that means a difference of over £300 a month.

At 15% it would mean an extra £1100 a month.

As you say, lower interest rates mean more affordable mortgages but increase in house prices. I don’t think the chart reflects that.

Not sure on this fella, can’t make up my mind on him. Seems to me the spin from the BBC is anti Orban and same from western allies and NATO. The majority of Hungarians seem to vote for him in big numbers though.

Refuses to send military aid to Ukraine and critical of Zelensky. It’s a no from me. More divisive politics, breeding hate and anti-EU sentiment like Farage.

Think your view is simplistic and as usual tainted by your own political stand point, he’s taken in plenty of Ukrainian refugees and hasn’t pulled Hungary out of the EU, it is ok to be critical of the EU and also be part of it and have other valid opinions and policies as a leader and nation especially when he’s such strong democratic support from his own people… why the comparison to Farage I don’t know.

His government launched oppressive legislation to discriminate against LGBT and other minorities using the covid pandemic as an excuse to undermine peoples rights.  He also created a border fence to keep out asylum seekers. He also loosely supports Putin although has been critical of the invasion of Ukraine.

I don’t think it was a cheap comment. Mounts has voted for Farage and this Hungarian PM is cut from the same cloth. It’s not to suggest Mounts himself is fascist but these politicians rely on normal folk for support and cleverly prey on their irrational fears to garner support.

I lost £12k on my first house.

Purchased in height of the Labour boom years then sold on the back of the subsequent recession.
