NI protocol.

No. But it’s hardly the same crossing from NI to Ireland, that’s already happening.

NI is Uk Ireland is EU.

So you are happy treating that border differently ?

Who is allowed to cross that border ? And how do you check it is only them if movement is free ?

Special circumstance deserve exemption, so the answer to your question is yes.

You’ll have to identify these “prominent” leave campaigners for me Cheese because I don’t recall any serious Leave voice who didn’t see leaving the Customs Union and Single Market as essential parts of the Leave case.

So we have an open border to the UK from Europe and border checks to move within the UK ?

How do you know at the new internal border you have put between NI and England that some has enter NI from Ireland under you new exemption scheme ?

There is already free movement of people from NI to the republic.

And fairly free from UK to RoI. You don’t need a passport to travel to Ireland just an approved form of photo-ID

It’s not new,  there are checks from NI to UK even now, you can pick up illegal entrants at passport control. The issue is goods being held up and duty charged unnecessarily, the movement of people between NI Eire is already happening and will never be subject to a border on the island of Ireland.

Are you saying you need a passport to travel to NI from England ? You mention passport control .

You liked a post that said you do not need a passport

You do need a passport from NI, less stringent when I’ve flown out of Dublin…. Granted it’s been a few years.

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/ireland/entry-requirements#:~:text=Ireland%2C along with the UK,a passport to visit Ireland.

No you don't .  You have to prove nationality as is says further down but no passport requirement.

The facts are there 2 'sides' in NI the Republicans will not accept a border on the island and the GFA restricts ability to do it.

The Nationalists will not accept extra checks to move within the UK.

The same logic applies to goods, if they can arrive freely in mainland UK from NI and freely in NI from the South you basically have the back door open. If you say it is not like that you have to wonder why there has been talk about the technology solution.

And what? I knew you didn’t need a passport. I liked that someone confirmed.

As it happens, I’ve travelled to RoI three times in last 12 months. Each time I used my passport. Not because I had to but because if I relied on another acceptable photo-ID it’d probably need to be my UK driver’s license and I wouldn’t trust the government to still have the same rules for travel when I wanted to travel as they did when I booked.

I was pointing out to Mounts he liked your post, saying you do not need a passport when he said you did need one. You grumpy old bear.

We’ll speak clearly man! I just went back about 6 pages wondering where I liked a post saying you don’t need a passport.

I always used passport from Ni to manchester,  if a driving licence is currently sufficient proof then that could be changed to requiring a passport. At the end of the day equivalence should be used to negate the need for checks on freight.. and that’s what the whole conversation was originally about…before you hijacked it. 🤣

So you want the United Kingdom to introduce passport checks across one of its own borders?

GOOD LUCK WITH THAT

I didn’t get the chance to vote on how EU would charge its citizens for goods made in Europe and shipped via the UK, just the opportunity to leave the EU.  And I’m not complaining I just feel sorry for Irish folk getting ripped off by the EU.

Why? - fuck them, they want to be part of the EU, so they get everything they deserve surely?

Because a hard border could cause a return of the troubles.. apparently.

Here's a short compilation that includes Michael Gove, Boris Johnson, Dominic Raab, David Davis, Daniel Hannan, and Nigel Farage.
