Very clever, given the high Asian population, to go in on a Peace in Gaza platform. That’ll get the Muslims into the polling booths and many of the others shrugging their shoulders asking, “What’s that got to do with Rochdale?” But not realising that not voting against him by not turning up is exactly how he’s got in. Time we took up the Aussie system and make voting mandatory.

If you simply don't vote, it could just be that you're not politically engaged. Spoiling your ballot is an expression of disapproval. Not necessarily It doesn't differentiate between disapproval or just not interested for whatever reason Same as low turnouts don't differentiate between the two

BobyBrno
Did someone say they hadn’t seen a Palestinian flag in real life? Expect to see many more come the election. Thought it may be about the economy. I may be wrong. Galloway said his party will stand in Bolton. Lovely. #flagshagger

Not really as it will get chucked in the bin as a spoilt vote A spoil vote is a spoilt vote regardless of whether you dra cock and balls on it or write what you put Galloway got in on a turnout out of 39.7%. Do you think if voting was compulsory he would care if it was result of 60.3% of votes being spoilt?

But I think it would be a far more meaningful message if 60.3% of ballots were spoiled, rather than 60.3% just didn't bother voting. Ani
I have always voted in every election since I was old enough. I have posted before In the European elections I never used to know who to vote for so would just write a swear word using every box on the ballot. Kids still mention that I was very proud with my effort of PISSFLAPS

If it's cumpolsory to vote then a spoiled ballot doesn't indicate the reason for it Under the current system if you're going out of your way to vote then spoil the ballot then your sending a message when they count up the number of people who did so Then you can take a more estimated guess of people who can't be arsed because they've been at work all day, EastEnders is on and it's raining or just not interested
mickbrown
I’d do away with postal ballots. Unless you’re 80 plus or have no legs.

I agree it's not happening anytime soon but would prefer to try other routes to encourage a higher turnout Maybe weekend voting? In 2019 when it was in December on a Thursday, that probably put a fair few off

How do you differentiate between those who couldn’t be arsed and those who didn’t vote as a protest. At least writing “None of the above are fit to represent me!” would send a message. It wouldn't as they just get lobbed in as spoilt votes. They don't compile a list of why a vote was spoilt so writing that wouldn't send a message anymore than just ticking all the boxes If you're forcing people to vote and they are just not interested in politics for whatever reason, then spoiling the vote won't give an indication as to whether they think politicians are useless or it's something they're not interested in
