Before the election the Labour Party said as part of their promises to invest more in defence. It's always been a priority but most people don't read manifestos

They also announced a full review of spending on the military didn't they?

I was on here at the time saying I was surprised it wasn't higher up the political agenda.

In a world where we can't trust the US - we need to massively understand our game.

Being a Labour Party member the manifestos come out, which I agreed with but lord knows I've had battles with the local lefties

It’s was literally announced the day after Trump said we need to increase our spending.

He's been saying that for years hasn't he?

Although I've no doubt the timing was calculated to tie in with the White House trip. And it worked by the looks of things. So I'm not sure who was playing who......

Did they mention increase would come from foreign aid being cut?

I bet. Although I don't think it will be as much as a hard sell next time around.

Still no national service though! 😁

No. They've not done the review yet.

And to be fair - I'd have supported it if they did.

Because as a nation we have to wait but increased spending on our military was a cornerstone of the manifesto because of the state the last 14 years had left the nation in.

The idea that Labour doesn't care about defense it's a really modern trope.

😄 shows what a mess the Tories had become.

Labour loves a war remember, another trope that forgets that our conflicts had support from all sides of the house.

I still think some of those decisions stink though and you only have the government of the time to blame really. So I kind of understand folk that have served having a bit of beef with Blair over things like Iraq.

Afghanistan not so much as the US invoked article 5 after 9/11, something I think was a mistake in hindsight but the backing they had was huge.

Loves a war? That's a stretch.

Yeah and when the US invoked article 5 a lot of the Eastern European countries including Ukraine sent troops cos that is what allies do.

True. But we also wouldn't have severley damaged the Western alliance that we've carefully cultivated since WW2.

Severely, schmeverely. All be forgotten with backslapping within no time at all. Only Art Of The Deal stuff with Trump. When he gets the peace he wants (and some mineral rights no doubt) all will be hunky dory and the freeloading European mainlanders will be paying their whack.

A win win

Trump planned every word.

Course he did.

I think it's going to take a good couple of years to understand whether their approach has worked or not. I don't think this is the type of problem that you can solve in 8 months, sadly.

Smashing the gangs is not a new thing. It’s been happening for years, unfortunately it’s never going to be enough to stop the boats. As mentioned before on here it’s an industry that’s massively profitable, like drugs, as soon as one person is arrested there’s many more willing to fill that gap.

Maybe. I don't know enough about it to form an opinion really. Other than it's likely to take a long time to achieve.

Doesn't look like many gangs have been smashed if there are that many arriving.

You can find out yourself. It’s where ‘GBeebies’ get their figures from.
