I think we should be allowed to redefine what a word or phrase means at least 3 times a month.

Ironically if I choose to redefine 3 to mean a million I can redefine something more than anyone else.

Yeah but I've redefined a million to mean 2

You've just generated a whole row on a definition of the phrase 'self-made' in which you are clearly wrong.

You're, not for the first time, taking that saying in the absolute most literal sense possible. Nobody apart from you would ever do that or come to that silly conclusion when hearing that term.

To normal people it just means they started as a normal person and worked their way up to being a billionaire.

Then you're going off on tangent calling people thickos and cunts because people say that's wrong.

In your warped mind you've managed to twist a generic term that's used by everyone and generated a little Friday tea time row for yourself.

You may as well have just walked in your local pub and picked a fight for no apparent reason.

No I didn't. You have it back to front. I was talking in a more nuanced way, then Zico brought up dictionary definitions.

you're thinking of Trump

the fact is, it didn't go tits up, and they are now self made billionaires

you don't have to like them, I'm not a fan of Musk for sure, but that's not to deny what they did to get where they are

Ah you silly sausage you have two, I have a million because I do not know about your redefinition.

Jesus wept. 🤦‍♂️ You'd have been praising slave-owners for their entrepreneurialism in the 1700's.

They are self made to an extent but with a good chunk of help from the life their parents could provide.my issue with Self Made labels is they often come with an idea that the only thing stopping others from doing it is gumption and work ethic.

If your argument only works with your own personal 'more nuanced' definition that contradicts the actual meaning of the word, then the problem is your definition

That's a heck of a leap there. Bezos at least pays his staff even if it is the minimum he can get away with.

Exactly.

That, and I am fucking terrific.

My argument isn't to do with the word/phrase "self-made". You took us down that route.

Because they did whatever they could to make as much money as possible regardless of any moral implications, and you applaud that, don't you? How do you think Musk's father made his money?

Even slave owners in the 1700's paid their slaves - the minimum they could possibly get away with.

Slaves were forced to work. No one is being forced to work for Amazon. You’re on fire tonight kidda 😂

You took yourself down that route by taking the phrase in the most literal sense possible.

Shit had lost track of the days, did not realise is Friday and things go weird on here on Fridays.

Good Luck Everyone. Seems someone has started early.

But Zico posted the 'literal' definition...?

Zico posted a definition of the term that 99.9% of the population would agree with.

On Planet Cheese however you disagree with the definition and think the term should imply anyone self made should've had no help or assistance In any way shape or form.

Ok mate. If that interpretation makes you feel better and less thick. Yes, that's exactly what has gone on. 👍

See my reply above. That's how it works isn't it? Doesn't matter what moral boundaries are overstepped, as long as someone makes as much money as possible, they should be celebrated?

There is nothing wrong with making money. But of course we shouldn't be celebrating people who've done so at the expense of others and the environment.

Complex though isn't it.

Take Jim Ratcliffe for example. Grangemouth provided employment in an area of Scotland that badly needed it, for a people with lots of different skill sets. The plant however has caused a huge amount of pollution and flooded the Forth with toxic plastic pellets. If that was you or me we'd be in prison. Just like the person who fly tipped that mountain of trash near Oxford.

Could probably say the same for a lot of billionaires across the country. They just shouldn't be above the law and neither should they be given so much political influence. That's the problem.

It's there is written form. Right there above.

Read it.
