Unless they did absolutely everything by themselves without the assistance of employees until they became a billionaire, and they didn't use the amenities, transport links, health care systems, power networks, banking systems etc. etc. etc, then they are not "self-made".

Now you're just being silly.

Post the Oxford English Dictionary definition.

I'm just pointing out that a "self-made billionaire" isn't actually "self-made", and has relied on societal structures created by and contributed to by hundreds of millions of people who aren't billionaires. What's silly about that?

Can you post the other 2 as I don't subsribe to the OED.

Bezos was given $250,000 by his billionaire father to start Amazon.

Musk was supported by his apartheid era mine owning father in his early years.

Getting side-tracked here anyway. I'm just pointing out that nobody who has horded billions of pounds/dollars worth of wealth has done it alone, and has almost certainly exploited millions of other people. If you think that's laudable, fair enough.

1. The modern, standard meaning

A person who has achieved success or wealth by their own efforts, not through inheritance or family advantage.
This is the everyday meaning used in business, media, and academia.

2. A broader personal-development sense

Something or someone that has developed or improved themselves through their own efforts.
Example: “a self-made writer,” “a self-made scholar.”
This doesn’t necessarily refer to money — it’s about skills, character, reputation, etc.

3. Obsolete: Literally made by oneself

Something created by one’s own hands or efforts, not made by someone else.
This older meaning can refer to objects or people in the sense of self-created — which no one uses today outside of humorous exaggeration.

It’s the same goon who said Musk wasn’t an entrepreneur

And you cunts wonder why society is on its arse and poverty levels are reverting back to the days of Charles Dickens. It's fucking obvious, unless you're thick.

Bezos had already started Amazon and got it up and running from a garage when his parents invested / gave him cash

Musk was given funding by his dad which he says was arond 10%, and they had other investors, in the first company he and his brother / mate set up - when they sold it for £300m he got £20M

then went and set up other companies to get to where he is now

that's perfectly normal for any business starting up

it's the the vision, hard work and endeavour of a person that makes them a self made success

Imagine hating on successful people so much, what a bitter twisted fool you are. Instead of spending your days online whining about them why don’t you try and set up your own business and donate your millions to those that need it.

Better than shouting at a hotel pal. Tell me how I'm wrong...

I don’t think someone working hard to be a rich millionaire/billionaire should be resented or criticised. Good luck to them. Even inherited wealth isn’t anyone’s “fault”. Wealth creation is good for growth (not that we know what that is in the UK anymore).

Unlike the film line though, greed is not good. Tax evasion is evil, even tax avoidance is morally questionable at times. Too many people/companies do not pay their fair way. They must be blind or morally bankrupt when they walk down a street and see some folks really struggling in life.

Oh to be Warren Buffett or another billionaire philanthropist with a conscience. What a great way to live a life 👏

it started when you said "There is no such thing as a "self-made billionaire"" and then continued on to the idea that the dictionary definition of "self-made" used by folk is incorrect and any one who does use it is a thicko

Then you have misunderstood my point entirely, and you are indeed a thicko.

You've just generated a whole row on a definition of the phrase 'self-made' in which you are clearly wrong.

You're, not for the first time, taking that saying in the absolute most literal sense possible. Nobody apart from you would ever do that or come to that silly conclusion when hearing that term.

To normal people it just means they started as a normal person and worked their way up to being a billionaire.

Then you're going off on tangent calling people thickos and cunts because people say that's wrong.

In your warped mind you've managed to twist a generic term that's used by everyone and generated a little Friday tea time row for yourself.

You may as well have just walked in your local pub and picked a fight for no apparent reason.

we were/are on the same page in that we agreed that the wealthiest of the wealthy (and indeed everyone) need to pay their way fairly and equally but they don't

I understand the point you are making when you post the wine glass analogy of trickle down economics, and it's a very valid point

it was the bit in between where you tried to re-define the term "self made" that it all started to go wrong for you

He can have billions. He will never have Platt in the 120th minute v Belgium in The Westleigh 1990.

Also the mega rich parents to pay the bills and bail them out of it goes tits up.

I think we should be allowed to redefine what a word or phrase means at least 3 times a month.

Ironically if I choose to redefine 3 to mean a million I can redefine something more than anyone else.
