So we've gone from "Brexit means Brexit" to "Brexit means basically staying in the EU but surrendering any influence we had".

Nice one.  :good:

How have you dreamt that up?

Some bloke on LBC now saying that his local supermarket had 22 out of 23 tills manned by Indian and Pakistani people the other week (in Harrow) and that's a perfect example of why people have voted to leave the EU.

So we've gone from "Brexit means Brexit"

That statement doesn't mean anything, never has and never will, it was a ridiculous thing to say at the time, and it still is.

I assume he refers to the leaked EU document today as per the quote....

Guidelines setting out the EU's proposed future relationship with the UK after Brexit have been leaked.

They say the UK will remain a “member” of the EU’s customs union and single market during any transition period, likely to last about two years.

They also suggest the UK will remain under the full jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice for a number of years after the March 2019 exit.

Membership of the single market means keeping all of the EU’s “four freedoms” – goods, services, capital, and labour – although the UK government says that new long-term arrivals from the EU (not tourists) will have to register during the transition period.

Membership of the customs union restricts the UK’s ability to sign new trade deals but informal negotiations with other countries could still be possible.

He's indicative of the current government in so much as he's a fucking dickhead.

One dickhead in a party does not tar all the party, there's plenty of dickheads in Tory, Labour and liberal parties but also plenty of good MPs on all sides of the political spectrum, have to agree about Hammond he's fucking loathsome individual from what I have seen and heard.

It shouldn’t cost anything for a free trade deal but no doubt it will and I’m not in a position quantify it however it will be much less than we currently pay and should cost the country less than any tariff that might be implemented should no there be no deal and in this part of the negotiations we should use the trade imbalance to our advantage. We’re now moving on to trade talks no suprise that it’s going as I predicted. A deal will be done.????????

We are paying £40bn for the right to leave the biggest free trade market in the world.

I am not sure that would appear in the good idea section of any good book on economics.

I agree that the EU has a lot of issues that need changing in terms of the politics but there is no economic reason to leave.

The biggest irony someone pointed out is that included in the divorce bill will be pension costs for certain Euro staff and depending on the terms it could include Farage !

The EU seem to be on a path to a federal state despite what we heard before the referendum that process I feel is really at odds with what the majority of UK folk want, it is also at odds with what many other EU countries who do not want more federalism.

We cannot change it from within we have exhausted that path and it is right we move on and work closely with the EU while regaining our own identity and sovereignty.

The deal we are working on is a free trade deal with the EU and I firmly believe we will get that deal.

Finally Farage has played his part in the EU he has pressed for change and tried to make the EU change its spots while highlighting many of its faults, he should take his pension as he has played a full and active part in the EU and I would not expect him to do anything else.

I agree, and I've also always thought we will get that deal....the main issue is about how much it will actually cost us, on an ongoing basis, and what else we will concede in order to achieve the deal (movement of labour being the obvious one)

'Everything that has transpired has done so according to Mount's design' Mwah ha ha.

You don't say.

I've read the joint report, which is without prejudice (nothing is agreed ...) and I have to say it is less complicated than the qualifying procedure for Euro 2020. Incidentally the 4 matches originally planned for Brussels have been switched to Wembley, where both semis and final are already placed. This means that England (assuming qualification) will play group matches at Wembley, with possibly one at Hampden, and only leave UK for a (potential) quarter-final in Munich/Baku/Rome/StPetersburg.

This round was drawn out by the EU to see if a German government view emerged.

The coalition talks are about to begin again soon with the SPD (whose leader wants a United States of Europe by 2025).

The Irish question only appears to have one solution which can be acceptable to both parties.

Has anyone else on here reached the same point as me where I think that we are leaving the EU, the politicians will do what they do, and we will see what happens? And in a year or two we will decide whether or not it was a good idea?

I've just moved from a US-based company who were dithering about the effects, to a Japanese-based company who have reaffirmed how happy they are to have based their EMEA operations in the UK

Why debate it now? Debate it in a couple of years down the line when we can actually see what the effect has been

Indeed, and a lot of people are still under the impression that the next stage is "negotiating a trade deal". It's not. Far from it.

What is it going to be then? Serious question by the way.

Trawling through all the mishaps of Brexit, it looks like N.I are the winners with duel EU and UK passports.

Trawling through all the mishaps of Brexit, it looks like N.I are the winners with duel EU and UK passports.

As it stands, it does look like NI really will be the winners, they'll get the best of both worlds. I can see a lot of big business relocating to Belfast, if the deal is as good as it seems. The devil will be in the detail though.

We've compromised on some things, as have the EU.

Reading the detail, it seems as though we are at a reasonable place, as long as "alignment " isn't a trap.

Didn't many in NI have 2 passports anyway?

I listened to bits on 5 live yesterday

Eileen Fostervfrom the DUP seemed to be saying that we would be leaving the customs union whilst still having no boarder? That would just make Ireland a gateway for duty dodging between the UK and the EU surely? Be huge sums to be made i’m sure and Ireland would benefit greatly from it if so (to the detriment of both the British andEuropean tax payers)

Still if it means continued peace it’s probably the least worst option

Didn't many in NI have 2 passports anyway?

Some do

Through my mother I'm entitled to an Irish Passport, and I actually sent my application off last week, so I'll at least still have an EU passport which will make life a little bit easier for me hopefully.

Indeed, and a lot of people are still under the impression that the next stage is "negotiating a trade deal". It's not. Far from it.

The former Conservative leader, Iain Duncan Smith, said the next phase - the trade discussions - would be the "brutal but vital bit".

What happens if we get really good trade deals?

Will everyone calm the fuck down then?
