Given the choice i'd prefer not to eat Halal meat. Why should i eat meat thats been killed in a way that religious nutters dictate.

  • I'm sure that makes the animals very happy.

I do, massively.   If we're going to eat meat, at least show the animal some respect and care when slaughtering. Neither kosher nor halal should be permitted for me.

Halal black pudding salad only for me.

Maccies in muslamic areas sell shit loads of the the fillet o fish burgers and fish finger happy meals.

As a proper curry and kebab has always been halal i cant say im fussed.

The animal is going to die anyway it being in possibly slightly less pain when it's slaughtered wont stop me eating it.

The 'humane' method is hardly kind to the animals.

If i was that fussed about the wellbeing of an animal killed when i eat it i'd join the missus in being veggie

Guess time flies. Point remains though.

Slitting an animals throat and letting it bleed out with its head flapping loosely on its neck is horrible.

Actually watched a documentary showing the lot once. Unless they've changed things then its far from humane.

Normally, animals are stunned first then killed with a bolt. Nothings perfect, but its pretty quick and 'painless'.

Watching the kosher job, the cow was brought in, its head leaning over a wall/gate. The chap lifted up what is basically a sword and cut it, the blood squirted into a room, hitting a wall, whilst the animal suffered.

It wasn't pleasant viewing.

Strangely the slaughter man seemed decent and respectful but using an inhumane method.

The idiots doing the standard humane methods, were freaks and weirdos. May not be reflective of industry as a whole, but was eye opening.

I honestly thought Jewish law forbid the animal to suffer. Although in mass abbatoirs it Must be tough to police

English or Scotch?

Meat's Meat. Couldn't give a shite personally, I'd be vegetarian If I cared so much.

According to this article in the Independent (from 2014) there are two types of Halal slaughter permitted in the UK. The first and most common type involved stunning the animal and then cutting its throat to let the blood drain out - the second and less common is the same but without the stunning. How the latter of the two is still being legally practiced in the UK is beyond me - and quite a few countries in Europe have taken a lead in banning it all together.

I particularly liked Denmark's take on it - that 'animal rights come before religious rights'. Priorities set in the right order for me there.

For me - religion is a bit like kids pratting about. Let them do what they want as long as they're not hurting anybody (or in this case anything) - but once they cross a line then adults should step in.

Personally - once an animal is stunned and effectively unconscious and free from pain - you can say whatever mumbo jumbo takes your fancy providing its not suffering.

Went into MacDonald's at the bottom of Derby street the other day. Bar us, every customer was Asian, not that bothered with halal.

Bet they were eating Fillet of Fish. Guess what, Fish is Halal.

As is Warburtons bread.

Quite ironic isn't it ?

What? Do you mean the wheat is cut down without a stun gun. The backward bastards!

I'd post a link but some folk might moan haha....

I'm not arsed either way as I'm coeliac and don't eat the stuff.

It's never even crossed my mind.

I really don't care either way to be honest

Spot on.

Belgium areas banning it too.

Muslim and Jewish communities up in arms as it affects their religious sensitivities. One Jewish group claims its the worst attack on them since Hitler. Ffs backwards bastards.

This. If you gave a fuck about an animal you wouldn't be eating the delicious fuckers!

I miss Cheese

Yeh whatever happened to him?

No balls hasn't been around for a while either.

They must have run off together.

Bollocks.

We're not in a hunter gatherer society any more.

There are cultures that thank the dead animal for feeding them. Not saying we should but stunning a created before slaughter is hardly asking too much. Like those Chinese bastards frying live carp; twats.

And an interesting fact that might interest you- these delicious fuckers aren't so delicious when slaughtered while particularly stressed. Animals that are relaxed don't release stress hormones which affect the quality of the meat making it tougher.

Happy cow= tender tasty meat.

We have had animal rights legislation in the UK for nearly 200 years. It is a tradition we should be proud of rather than an Islamophobic act folk are suggesting it is.

I'm sure that makes the animals very happy.

I'm sure that makes the animals very happy.

So they shouldn't to it then?

Its merely a way of showing respect, not just for the animal, but for the environment which provides their food.

It's not too long since I'd sit with my mates on Jack Atkinson's (Butcher in Harwood) wall while they slaughtered sheep and cows. (Late 60s/Early 70s)
The cows were dispatched while walking freely in the yard with a captive-bolt pistol which, apart from the fact that the rest of the herd saw what was going on, was fairly quick if a little brutal. I don't think the "kill zone" is supposed to be in view of other animals these days. Anyway, once the cows were dead they were hoisted up and their throats cut to bleed into a big bucket (Back to the black pudding thread here).

No such luxury for the sheep. They'd be grabbed by the butcher, thrown onto a wire bed about three feet high, and heir throats cut from ear to ear, kicking furiously as the life ebbed from their bodies. They'd still give the occasional kick 10-15 minutes later which shocked us kids, in a "Fucking hell! It's still alive!" kind of way.

I'm not so sure that the halal process is any different to this apart from the prayers thanking Allah for the provision of meat.

As you say Micky, its moved on. Its hardly perfect and there are no doubt examples of poor treatment, but there are rules and these places are subject to punishment for flouting them. No exemption should be made on religious grounds.
