frank_spencer
Considering the left are supposed to be the easily offended. The right don't half get their knickers in a twist very easily. Youri McAnespie
I read somewhere that looney American lefties are demanding all 145 episodes of The Dukes Of Hazzard are remade, with politically correct erm, corrections, such as renaming the Duke boys' car as 'The Abbie Hoffman' and the Confederate Flag on its roof replaced with a peace sign. They'll have their work cut out for these new namby pamby reshoots as Boss Hogg, aka actor George Melly, died in 1979. In the remakes Daisy Duke (pictured below) will be portrayed by KD Lang. Members bolty58
I reckon this thread will go exactly the same way as the last one when Happy sees it. Psychic Carlos. I'll ignore Kane 57 who is clearly a mental midget. Why should you think this thread will go the same way? It's a current news story about something I would imagine many Brits would feel strongly about. Which of your many sensitivities does this one prick? Are you suggesting that this was started with 'one right wing post'. Beggars belief.

One day it's big Ben not going bong whilst it's fixed up and the next some statue somewhere is besmirched Eh? It's the 'left' that went to the trouble of writing and publishing an article in the Champagne Socialist Worker saying why it should be removed and labeling an historic figure by modern standards. No-one on this thread, as I see it, is that easily offended by it but, rightly, are questioning the sanity(?) of such a request. Everyone will have a different view though, i suppose? Anyway, it won't be happening, no way It's not the statue, per se, for me but the reasons for wanting it removed and the precedent that would set in the future. I'm not frothing at the mouth yet though

One crackpot, that should be dismissed as such, does not equal the left. As said above its never going to happen as all logical people can see the difference between the likes of General Lee and Horatio Nelson. MancWanderer
Afua Hirsch, well know left wing broadcaster, lawyer and human rights activist wants Nelsons Column torn down 'because he was a white supremacist'. "If they are doing it in America.............." https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/aug/22/toppling-statues-nelsons-column-should-be-next-slavery Thankfully, there are brighter folk around like Maajid Nawaz http://www.lbc.co.uk/radio/presenters/maajid-nawaz/maajid-destroys-guardian-columnists-suggestion-to/ I await with interest the Lord Mayor of Londons comments. I often find your posts/comments close to the edge bolty but more than not agree with you as the world descends into pathetic correctness Nothing wrong with correctness at all. We shouldn't hate or accept wrong that has happened in the past, but to seek out things like Afua Hirsch is trying to do is actually worse in my opinion I also await Sadiq Khan's comments. He was someone who impressed me initially but is slowly spoiling his reputation

Members bolty58
Expressing my preference that it be closed before it goes too far ??????? Go on then, I'll play. Just how does this thread offend you? What do you mean by too far? Genuine question because I often find myself wondering how I would have fared facing a febrile mob on the terraces in '69 surrounded by blokes who would think that walking across the DMZ and presenting an opponent with a daffodil might make for fluffy marshmallow happiness all round. Not sure what cotton wool wrapped and cosseted existence you may have experienced up until now but it does appear to be a million miles away from the real world. This shutting down of debate (from what I can see totally unjustified in this particular thread) is what has led us to where we are in many ways. By that I mean that indigenous white heterosexual males have less rights than virtually every other demographic in the country. This can never be an acceptable state of affairs. He was someone who impressed me initially but is slowly spoiling his reputation We need to debate these things but as you suggest, this pathetic obsession with correctness means that it is simpler in some peoples opinion to shut things down. All this does in the long run is build up a pressure cooker of resentment. Far better to get everything aired IMO rather than face the inevitable explosion from pretending that certain views and opinions don't exist. You are spot on with your comment about Ms. Hirsch. People like her are akin to ambulance chasers but with wider and more sinister intent. Just looking for reasons to stir up controversy where there is none. No doubt we will soon have to consider whether Arkwright, Crompton, Kay and Hargreaves should have all memorials removed from cotton towns for their implicit involvement in processing the fruits of (obnoxious and regrettable) slave labour. Been watching a lot of US news recently and talking head type stuff - you get the sense that there is a real bubbling resentment from all 'sides' that we saw a little glimpse of rising over in Charlottesville the other week. When debate, free speech etc gets silenced it will undoubtedly cause resentment and it also gives those groups like we saw rear their heads recently more fuel and support to their cause. This then fuels the other side and around we go. Edited August 24, 2017 by madthatter
